Delaware County Fair: Morgan Jr. sends out two of Wednesday's OBC winners
Trainer Virgil Morgan Jr. bagged one of two $66,500 Ohio Breeders Championships (OBC) for 2-year-old filly trotters with Aunt Laura and the $33,600 OBC for older trotters with Refined on Wednesday's card at the Delaware (Ohio) County Fair.
Aunt Laura (Brett Miller) was overtaken for the top spot by Aunt Lilly (Anthony MacDonald) at the 28 4/5 quarter. Aunt Lilly went on to chop out the half in 59 4/5 and three-quarters in 1:28 4/5 while Triump Over You (Trevor Smith) made steady progress from first-over while tracked by Up (Chris Lems) and Brink Street (Ronnie Wrenn Jr.). In the stretch Aunt Laura found a gap in between Aunt Lilly and Triump Over You, and once she had room, Aunt Laura surged through on her way to the victory by three-quarters of a length in 1:58. Up was second at 40-1 and Triump Over You collected third.
"I've been fond of her from Day One. I've told (breeders/owners) Dick and Joyce McClelland she's really nice. Thank God they kept believing me," Morgan Jr. stated post-race. "Sometimes she's her own worst enemy training. She'll see things, just immature, but she has a world of talent and if she keeps her act together, in Ohio she'll be a force to be reckoned with."
A daughter of Uncle Peter, Aunt Laura has a pair of tallies from seven outings, has banked $63,000 and paid $24.00 to win as an 11-1 offering.
Refined (Dan Noble) went to the engine from post one, led the way through fractions of 27 4/5, 57 and 1:24 4/5 and won the OBC Aged Trot by two lengths in 1:53 2/5. Pocket-sitter Caviar Gold (Aaron Merriman) checked in second and My Pal Sparky (Cameron McCown) was third.
This was the 45th career victory for Refined, an 8-year-old Uncle Peter mare owned by the McClellands and Larry Wills. She has put away $1,196,654 and returned $2.20 to win as the 1-9 choice.

Back in the first OBC for the rookie trotting fillies, Travel Nurse (B. Miller) put up fractions of 28 1/5, 57 4/5 and 1:26 4/5, but Dream Something (Tyler Smith) had popped out of the pocket before three-quarters and was advancing. In the lane Dream Something forged her way by Travel Nurse and held off a number of challengers to the wire to get the job done by half a length in 1:56 3/5. Mega Money (Aaron Merriman) split foes in the stretch from fourth and was second and Travel Nurse was fourth-placed-third after original third-place finisher and 1-5 favorite Mocha Hill (Chris Page) broke late and was moved back to fifth.
"It was a little tight there right at the wire. We were holding our breath there," said winning trainer Miles Wollam.
Dream Something is by Uncle Peter and was bred by Johanna Beaver, Michael Carter and Mary McLoughlin. Wollam also co-owns Dream Something, who prevailed for the fourth time in seven trips behind the gate and has earned $117,883, with Julie Ann and Dale Sweet. She paid $14.80 to win as a 6-1 shot.
