Delaware County Fair: Burke trainees headline opening day card

Sea Silk 9-5-21
JJ Zamaiko Photography Sea Silk is now the fastest 2-year-old pacing filly on a half-mile track in harness racing history

A quartet of Ron Burke trained pacers will take center stage in the $134,370 Ohio Breeders Championship for 2-year-old fillies in opening day action at the Delaware County Fairgrounds on Sunday, September 19.

In the first $67,185 division, the undefeated Sea Silk (Chris Page) will look to extend her winning streak to eight straight.

In her last start, the $300,000 Ohio Sire Stakes Championship at MGM Northfield Park on September 5, the daughter of Downbythseaside overcame the outside post eight and cruised to a three length win in a world record time of 1:51 2/5. Sea Silk, a $47,000 yearling purchase by Downbytheseaside, now has earned $340,000 for Burke Racing, Weaver Bruscemi, Knox Services and the Hatfield Stables.

As a result of her previous performances, the racing officials at the Delaware County Fair have limited the wagering to win only in the sixth race.

Stablemate Dragon Lady (Aaron Merriman) has been made the second morning line betting choice by virtue of her 1-5-1 record in her seven career starts. The Fear The Dragon lass has picked up $105,500 for her owners Burke Racing Stable, Weaver Bruscemi, W. Donovan, and Let It Ride Stables.

The second division will feature Cape Cod Hanover (Chris Page) and Spitting Image (Mike Wilder). Cape Cod Hanover finished second to Sea Silk in the OSS Championship and drew the rail in the OBC event. Cape Cod Hanover has won five of seven starts on the season and has bankrolled $180,550 for Burke Racing Stable, Weaver Bruscemi, Rich Lombardo Racing, and RAS Racing.

Leaving from post six, Spitting Image will be the longest shot of the Burke trainees. The homebred is winless on the season, but has five second- and third-place finishes, picking up $28,200 in seven seasonal starts. Burke Racing Stable and Weaver Bruscemi share ownership in the Yankee Cruiser filly.

Sundays action will also feature the $18,900 Ohio Breeders Championship for aged pacers, three divisions of the Buckeye Stallion Series 3-year-old colt and gelding trot and a pair of BSS divisions of the 3-year-old filly trot.

The 18-race card will go postward at 1:00 p.m.
