Delaware: Cherokee's Boy hangs on

Ira Kaplan|Jun 11, 2005

Cherokee's Boy put away favored Private Lap and just held off the late charge of Separato to win the $100,000 Brandywine Handicap at Delaware Park.

Travis Dunkelberger took Cherokee's Boy straight to the lead in the Brandywine, a 1 1/16-mile race for 3-year-olds and up. They kicked away from Private Lap after setting fractions of 24.02, 47.53, and 1:11.60, but by midstretch Separato and Ouagadougou, the last two in the field of seven down the backstretch, were flying. Cherokee's Boy won by a neck, with Separato 1 3/4 lengths ahead of Ouagadougou.

Cherokee's Boy ($17), a 5-year-old son of Citidancer, covered the distance in 1:44.30. He is owned by Z W P Stable and trained by Gary Capuano.
