Delaware: Alternate draws clear in Go for Wand

Alternate moved closer to a berth in the Grade 3 Delaware Oaks by scoring a 4 3/4-length victory in the $75,600 Go for Wand Stakes at Delaware Park.

A 3-year-old filly trained by Graham Motion, Alternate ($3) was boxed in among rivals for most of the 1 1/16-mile race before jockey Ramon Dominguez steered her clear of traffic on the far turn. She overtook Spelling in upper stretch and drew away, completing the distance in 1:46.35.

Alternate, now 3 for 4 lifetime, will likely make her next start in the $175,000 Susan's Girl Stakes at Delaware on June 29. The Delaware Oaks will be run July 20.

"One down and two more to go," said Motion, referring to the Susan's Girl and the Delaware Oaks. "I thought her effort was pretty professional, especially considering she was blocked in most of the way."
