SPOT PLAYS AND LIVE LONGSHOTS

Del Mar Race 2, (7:30 ET) - LIVE LONGSHOT

BOSTON CHARLEY (#1, 12-1) Got a sub-zero Beyer in his first-and-only, sure, but this $55k purchase is bound to be far better than that disappointing debut 3 weeks ago. Fact he showed excellent speed before melting down in a too-fast duel after drawing a conspicuous amount of play portends a far better effort this time while on the class drop and with benefit of that education; connections quite capable of turning this one around quickly. - Marty McGee

Del Mar Race 4, (8:30 ET)

SUGAR SPICE is chalk; late-runner QUINNETTE (#2, 6-1 pre-scratch) is the gamble. A 6-for-19 veteran with a style that suits the pace scenario, she drops from a race that already produced two next-out winners. - Brad Free

Del Mar Race 5, (9:00 ET)

Facing experienced maidens BROKER BRETT and SOUTHERN SUNRISE, first-time starter EXPO AND FIG (#4, 8-1 pre-scratch) might upset. His works are good, under-rated trainer Phil D'Amato starts "live" horses. - Brad Free

Del Mar Race 6, (9:30 ET)

I DAZZLE (#9, 3-1) finished full of run after a dreadful beginning to be a superb 3rd in the Osunitas here July 20. She's worked nicely 3 times since and while a slow start hindered her last time she's got more tactical speed to be better situated early. The way she finished says she's doing well and today's drop may be just what the Dr. ordered. - Michael Hammersly

Del Mar Race 7, (10:00 ET) - LIVE LONGSHOT

WAVE CATCHING (#4, 15-1) Looks to me like horse that's been asking to run two turns all along, & just now gets first shot at it. Superficial studiers will give too much weight to last-out 7th-place finish, but he was beaten less than 2 lengths that start. - Marcus Hersh

VULNERABLE FAVORITE

Del Mar Race 5, (9:00 ET)

BROKER BRETT (#2, 3-1) Big Beyers such as the 84 this guy earned from his latest at HollyPark invariably translate into a horse being overbet, and that could be the case with him. Four-year-old colt already has had 7 chances versus similar types, to no avail; seems like several others in here, i.e., Fly High, Southern Sunrise, or Mi Hijo, might well keep him a maiden through 8 starts. - Marty McGee
