Del Mar 'Ship and Win' program offered for fall meet

Del Mar will continue to offer an incentive program to owners who ship horses from out of state for the autumn meeting, which runs from Nov. 7-30.

The Ship and Win program will have terms similar to those in place for the track’s summer meeting. Del Mar will pay $1,000 to owners who start a horse at the meet who have not run in California this year. Such horses will also be eligible for a 30 percent purse bonus in overnight races.

Horses making their first start are not eligible for the bonuses.

During the track’s summer meeting, the overnight purse bonus was 33 percent.

The program was first offered in 2011, and is conducted in association with the Thoroughbred Owners of California. In 2011, 107 horses from outside of California were eligible for the bonuses, a figure that rose to a record 187 horses this summer.
