Del Mar: Pretty N Cool airs in Sorrento

DEL MAR, Calif. -- Pretty N Cool is unbeaten and untested after two starts, and looking every bit the summertime leader of California’s 2-year-old filly division.
Pretty N Cool won her stakes debut without difficulty in Wednesday’s $200,000 Sorrento Stakes for 2-year-old fillies, a win that makes her the favorite for the $300,000 Del Mar Debutante at seven furlongs on Sept. 5.
“She’ll be a very good filly in the future,” jockey Martin Garcia said.
Pretty N Cool led throughout her debut win in a maiden race on a sealed and sloppy track here on July 19. She stalked the pace in the Grade 2 Sorrento Stakes at 6 1/2 furlongs before taking the lead at the quarter-pole. Pretty N Cool led by four lengths with a furlong remaining and won by 2 1/4 lengths over 19-1 Gomo.
Pretty N Cool ($2.80) was timed in 1:16.94.
“She’s a good filly,” Garcia said. “You can do whatever you want. She tried to break really fast and she lost her ground. She recovered.”
Undisputed, a debut winner in a maiden race at Los Alamitos on July 4, led by 3 1/2 lengths on the backstretch, giving Garcia a target aboard the favorite. Pretty N Cool moved steadily closer to the leader on the turn.
“I didn’t want to go with that other horse,” Garcia said.
Pretty N Cool, by Scat Daddy, races for Mike Pegram, Karl Watson, and Paul Weitman and is trained by Bob Baffert. She has earned $162,000 from her two races.
Gomo, a maiden race winner on turf at Santa Anita on June 25, closed from fifth to finish 2 1/4 lengths in front of 17-1 One True Kiss. Right There was fourth, followed by Uptown Twirl and Undisputed.
