Del Mar notes: Goldencents will stay sprinting

DEL MAR, Calif. - Goldencents, the Santa Anita Derby winner who was beaten a length by Fed Biz in Sunday’s $251,750 Pat O’Brien Stakes, will stay in sprints this fall, trained Doug O’Neill said.

The 3-year-old Goldencents will be pointed to the $250,000 Santa Anita Sprint Championship over six furlongs, a key prep for the Breeders’ Cup Sprint there Nov. 2. The winner of the Santa Anita Sprint Championship receives an automatic berth to the BC Sprint.

Guns Loaded works for Futurity

Guns Loaded, third in the $150,250 Best Pal Stakes on Aug. 4, worked five furlongs in 1:01.20 on Wednesday, preparing for the $300,000 Del Mar Futurity on Sept. 4.

The end result of the workout met the expectation of trainer Cody Autrey, but the plan was not fully executed. Guns Loaded was meant to work in company with a stablemate.

“The company ran off,” Autrey said.
Guns Loaded galloped out six furlongs in 1:13, Autrey said.

Owned by James and Ywachetta Driver, Guns Loaded won his debut here in a maiden race over 5 1/2 furlongs July 20. He finished 2 3/4 lengths behind Alberts Hope in the Best Pal Stakes over 6 1/2 furlongs Aug. 4. The Grade 1 Del Mar Futurity is over seven furlongs, a distance that Autrey is ready to try with Guns Loaded.
“I don’t think it will be a problem,” he said.
