DEL MAR, Calif. – Wins arrived in bunches for several leading jockeys and trainers on the three-day opening weekend of the Del Mar summer meeting from Friday through Sunday.
Jockey Juan Hernandez, who has won the riding title at the track’s last four summer meetings, won four races Saturday from nine mounts on an 11-race card. On Sunday’s 11-race program, Emisael Jaramillo and Kazushi Kimura equaled the milestone. Jaramillo had seven mounts, while Kimura had eight.
Through Sunday, Hernandez was tied with Umberto Rispoli for the overall lead with five wins. Jaramillo and Kimura were tied for third with four wins, one ahead of Armando Ayuso.
Among trainers, Doug O’Neill had a four-win day from six starters on Sunday, with all the winners ridden by Jaramillo. Last December, Jaramillo moved from Florida to California with the backing of O’Neill.
On Friday, trainer Michael McCarthy had a three-win day with eight starters.
Through Friday, McCarthy, O’Neill, and Phil D’Amato were tied for first in the trainer’s standing with four wins.
