Del Mar: Miller able to retire All Squared Away

Trainer Peter Miller’s quest to re-acquire and retire stakes winner All Squared Away has come to fruition. A private purchase last week enabled Miller to take possession of All Squared Away and retire him, bringing to a close a saga in which Miller claimed the horse with the intention to retire him, only to start anew when the claim was voided.
All Squared Away, a 6-year-old gelding, won the Grade 3 Lexington Stakes at Keeneland on Polytrack as a 70-1 shot in 2012, and in 2013 was second in the San Luis Rey Stakes, San Juan Capistrano Handicap, and Whittingham Handicap, all major Southern California grass races.
But after returning from a two-year layoff, All Squared Away was entered and ran for $40,000, then was dropped to the $12,500 level and was claimed on July 16 at Del Mar. He was back in for $10,000 on Aug. 15, and finished eighth of 10. Miller claimed him that day, but the claim was voided owing to post-race unsoundness, so All Squared Away was returned to Ken Nettles.
Miller said he was able to purchase All Squared Away privately, and that the horse will reside at the nearby farm of one of his owners, Robin Hoffos.
“We bought him, and he’s been retired,” Miller said.
All Squared Away won 4 of 25 starts and $378,429.
