Del Mar internet plays for Sunday

Brad Free|Aug 26, 2006

Finding a vulnerable favorite to bet against is only half the battle.

At odds of 8-5, Falcon Scott was badly overbet Saturday in race 5. When jockey Victor Espinoza kept him four-wide throughout in the mile turf race, his fate was sealed. Falcon Scott finished off the board.

The other half of the battle is finding a high-odds horse to bet on. Race-5 winner Potential scampered to a $72.20 upset over unlucky Quebec Citizen, while the overlay we backed finished nowhere. Sensational Score produced a half-hearted rally through the lane, but was basically non-competitive at odds of 6-1.

And so, it is on to Sunday with a pair of $25 win bets and one $10 daily double linking the two.

Race 2

Steal Your Thunder was gelded prior to his July 1 third-place comeback, and trainer Carla Gaines has been racing him into shape. Last time out, he raced too far (11 furlongs).

He cuts back to nine furlongs Sunday, gets a beneficial rider change to Corey Nakatani, and is poised for the race of his career. It will have to be, because he is not fast enough yet. Expectations are for a career-topping performance.

Steal Your Thunder is listed at 8-1, and worth a play at 6-1 or higher.

The bet: $25 win Steal Your Thunder (minimum odds 6-1).

Race 3

Britt's Jules is jumping up in four levels from a third-place finish for $12,500 all the way to $32,000 first off the claim by Julio Canani. The class hike is an enterprising move, until you look at the entire career of 5-year-old Britt's Jules.

Two summers ago, Britt's Jules was one of the top 3-year-olds in the South. He finished third in the Grade 2 Super Derby at Louisiana Downs, third in the Grade 3 West Virginia Derby at Mountaineer Park, and second in the Grade3 Leonard Richards at Delaware Park.

The point is, Britt's Jules used to be a good horse. The four-level class hike suggests that Canani has turned him into a good horse once again. Britt's Jules is listed at 12-1 on the morning line, and worth a win bet at 9-1 or higher.

The bet: $25 win Britt's Jules (minimum odds 9-1).

Races 2 & 3

The bet: $10 daily double Steal Your Thunder to Britt's Jules (no minimum odds).

Note: If either Steal Your Thunder or Britt's Jules scratches, make it a $50 win bet on the other at the same minimum odds.
