Brother Derek will take all the money in the El Cajon Stakes, and he is over-qualified to win. However, his odds are low (3-5) and he faces a formidable rival in Cindago. While the well-regarded 3-year-old skipped the spring classics after a hairline fracture of his right knee, he established his class Dec. 26 in his maiden win.

Three horses that Cindago beat flattered the race. Runner-up Latent Heat won next out and is graded stakes-placed; third-place finisher Point Determined won next out and is a graded stakes winner; fifth-place finisher Mister Triester won next out and is graded stakes-placed.

Cindago has worked super for his comeback for John Sadler, and he could be long gone. His program odds are 8-1; he can be played at half that price in a one-way exacta over Brother Derek.
