Steal Your Thunder was the fifth choice in a seven-runner field in race 2, and he finished third. But the bet was $25 to win at odds of 9-1. Loser.

Britt's Jules was the sixth choice in a seven-runner field in race 3, and he also finished third. The bet was $25 to win at odds of 13-1. Loser.

Along with the $10 daily double linking the two, it was $60 further down the hole. Have to admit that things are looking rather bleak for this wagering column as the summer season winds down.

On to the Monday card.

Race 3

The last time that Nonino raced two turns on the Del Mar turf, he sprang a 17-1 upset. He returns to a Del Mar turf route Monday, while dropping in class from an allowance sprint against older, into a $50,000 claimer for 3-year-olds.

Nonino is 8-1 in the program, and worth a bet at half that price.

The bet: $25 win Nonino (minimum odds 4-1).

Race 4

It is possible Bella Cherie has no ability. But she got some wagering action in her debut (10-1), and finished fifth of seven after a slow start. She drops a notch Monday, gets another half-furlong, and meets an ordinary field of $32,000 maiden-claiming 2-year-old fillies.

Bella Cherie is 12-1 in the program, and worth a bet at half that price.

The bet: $25 win Bella Cherie (minimum odds 6-1).

Races 3 & 4

The bet: $10 daily double Nonino to Bella Cherie (no minimum odds).
