Del Mar to hand-time turf races for rest of meet
Del Mar plans to hand-time races on the turf course for the remainder of the summer meeting, through Sept. 7, after confusion arose in recent weeks regarding the accuracy of a newly installed GPS timing system.
Races on the main track will continue to be timed electronically, according to a statement released on Thursday by Equibase, which administers the timing system.

“The times produced by the Equibase GPS system on dirt races have proven to be highly accurate and will continue to be provided,” the statement read.
“Last week, we discovered some inconsistencies with respect to the GPS survey and our historical survey relating to the turf course that we’ll will work to rectify before Del Mar’s November meeting.”
The track’s autumn meeting will run from Oct. 31 to Nov. 29.
In recent weeks, particularly when turf rails have been set away from the permanent position, turf races were hand-timed at Del Mar. The final times of some races have been altered after additional review.
