Race 1 Midnight Destiny Midnight Lute was a two time BC Sprint champion and one of the best sprinters over the past few decades; dam did some decent work on the track banking $99K, but her offspring are a combined 0 for 17 to date; trainer McCanna has some gaudy numbers with first time starters on synthetic over the past three years (13 for 56, $3.30 ROI)   Iron Fist Filly cost her owners $1.5 million last September in Lexington; Daughter of leading sire Tapit, her dam Successful Outlook did some nice things on the track (graded stakes winner as 2YO), but her biggest claim to fame may be as the dam of G1 winning sprinter Sweet Lulu (4 of 7 lifetime, 3 of 3 on synth); plenty of pedigree to pull from.   Lord Nelson Generally feels like Baffert's 2-year-olds start to come out in full force this time of year, and this filly could prove to be a nice one; dam didn't do much on the track (0 for 2), but this filly is by the late Pulpit whose juveniles are 11 for 99 over the past five years on synthetic.   Selection By powerhouse sire Candy Ride, this filly cost her owners $185K back in March; Dam Lady of Choice wasn't much of a runner herself but her offspring have been strong (three foals that each earned over $100K including a multiple graded stakes winner that banked $692K); In great hands with Tom Proctor, who is 3 for 10 w ith 2-year-old firsters at Del Mar the past three years ($6.35 ROI).   Kantune Sire Kantharos hasn't proven himself as a stallion yet - but it's still early; he was a live 2-year-old who won two graded stakes out of his three career starts; stakes winning dam did so routing, but she's produced multiple winners; her offspring have combined to go 11 for 58 lifetime; intriguing.   Oatka Little Lou Dam Oatka Idas Destiny did some nice things on the track, going 8 for 26 lifetime and banking $156K in her career; sire Corinthian earned $1.2 million in his career and his juveniles have been reasonably successful the past five years (55 of 445).   Calculator Sire In Summation was a millionaire who did very well on synthetic surfaces (5 for 11) - that being said, his 2YO synthetic sprinters are 0 for 11 over the past five years; trainer Peter Miller is 7 for 29 over the past four years with 2-year-old first time starters at Del Mar.   Reflected Star Eskendereya is a very similar sire compared to Kantharos in that we haven't seen what they can do as stallions just yet; not much pedigree to speak of on the dam side, and trainer Cassidy is 0 for 11 over the past two years with 2-year-old first time starters; watch for any early action on the tote.   Milton As brilliant as sire Street Cry was on the track (multiple G1winner, $5.1 million earned, career best BSF of 119), he's lacked when it comes to producing juvenile winners on synthetic (3 for 38 over the past five years); Eoin Harty is 7 for 143 over the past five years with first time starters.   Ultra Sharp Dam Pecan Bayou's foals are combined 10 for 75 lifetime; sire Sharp Humor was a multiple graded stakes winner in his own right; trainer Craig Dollase has shown in the past that he can have first time starters in MSW races ready to roll at first asking (5 for 16 over the past two years, $5.66 ROI).   Big Changes Autrey is 2 for 5 over the past two years with first time starters on synthetic, and this filly's sire Midshipman was a beast on the sythetic surfaces (4 for 7) who won the '08 G1 Del Mar Futurity here, as well as the '08 BC Juvenile; If he gets in, look out. - Matt Bernier Race 2 More Stormyweather Last meet the rail won 21 percent of the time going 7f; but there is no telling if that will continue a year later; hasn't raced for a month and a half, but has stayed active in the mornings and her connections were likely just waiting on Dmr; lofty 82 Beyer two back; Spawr has good numbers using Delgadillo.   Moscato Girl Here's another that has not raced since June 1; like that one, she has been a regular worker - breezing every week or so since June 9; so fitness shouldn't be an issue; mediocre form - even that last-race third came in a 5-horse field; better figures fall in the 67-71 range; perhaps a piece.   Whodoo Pirate Consistent miss is stepped up in class off the claim; once raced for as cheap as $12,500; so classwise she doesn't look quite as appealing as others; was likely claimed with the aim of her moving up at Dmr over its synthetic surface; this miss ran well on the Tapeta at GG; needs to move up off the claim.   Two Step Flor Ran quickly in her latest with a runner-up finish in a tougher race on the turf; ad her preceding race was also good, a runner-up finish on the Poly at AP; not viewing the drop as a sign of negative health; as an out of state invader, there is a financial bonus for her in this spot; plus, she was claimed for 25K in March - less than what she runs for today; choice.   Hotaling Heart Has been away for 91 days - so the time off puts this one at a potential fitness disadvantage; three starts in NoCal resulted in two wins and a third in a starter; two of those were in cheap maiden claimers and claimers, however; find others more appealing.   Adellusion Was sharp in victory last out at Arlington, though it took her some time to get that first victory; is obviously fond of the synthetic, having been first or second in all five starts on such tracks; owns the top last-race Beyer; second selection.   Frisco Fog Is blessed with blazing speed and should benefit from returning to a synthetic track; she has a win and two seconds in three starts on such tracks - and none were in claiming races; this marks her first race for a tag.   Pay the Debt Cal bred consistently earns checks but might prefer racing on dirt over synthetic (off the board in 4 of 6 on such tracks); she also leaves the friendly confines of Cal-bred company today; barn has a poor synthetic record; like others more. - Byron King Race 3 Garen Half-brother to multiple G1 winner Invasor (11-12, $7.8 million) showed a little something in his first few career starts, but not thrilled about what he's been doing lately, and that includes a start over turf two back.   Sawyer's Hill Four of his five starts have been solid performances, and he was in tough while making his first start after breaking his maiden in his latest outing; not that this is a soft spot, but he looks like a better fit with these.   Toowindytohaulrox He's stakes placed racing over turf and feel that he's eligible to be ready to take a step forward while making his second start back from a layoff and his second start routing; it's interesting to see blinkers getting scrapped and he's being reunited with Smith.   Awesome Return Multiple stakes winner sports turf form that is plenty strong enough to label him a top contender, but he does have to be approached with a degree of caution when seeing that his connections are willing to give him up for 80k today.   Lolo El Canonero Sire wins with approximately 14% of his turf starters and dam won once from eight starts for 45k, including 1 of 5 turf starts for 40k; he doesn't find a soft spot for his turf debut, but he does have a turf leaning pedigree.   Sheila's Footsteps (GB) He hasn't run poorly in his two starts since arriving in America, but he will need to show more in order to see his number posted on top after this one is run, and his connections will hope for improvement with the addition of blinkers.   Ontology This colt has a little bit of turf in his pedigree and his only poor performance from four turf starts was in the BC Juv. Turf without Lasix; Reddam-owned colt must be respected in this spot.   Dynamic Decision 410k purchase has run very well in his first two career starts at demanding distances, and he has to be considered a legitimate threat in this race with those two starts in tow; like to see the versatility in running style he's shown in his first two outs.   Yard Line Sire wins with approximately 16% of his turf starters and this is the first foal from an unraced dam; he joined the triple-digit Beyer Speed Figure club in his latest outing and there's enough turf in his pedigree to suggest that he can handle the surface switch.   I'll Wrap It Up He's another in here with a solid pedigree for turf, and even though he's seeking his first turf victory in his sixth turf attempt, his turf form has been respectable; at the very least, a spot underneath in the exotics appears to be within his reach.   Footstepsinbronze (IRE) The added distance he sees today is a concern, and this is a tough spot for his first start against winners, but have to respect what he's shown in his two turf attempts; Fourth-place finisher from latest, Sammy Mandeville, won next out at SA on 5/4 going 1 1/8m over turf vs. MSW rivals with an 82 Beyer. - Brian Pochman Race 4 Sir Barclay Protected last time as soph was caught a bit wide; note wraps were added for that return; 10th finisher in last took a $12.5K N2L fray and the winner repeated in a $40K optional at Los Al; like the series of drills since the last race; should be rolling late if at all.   Mavericks Gun Off a bit slow in last and he just never recovered; he proved he fits in this league when nostrilized two back and note he was over a dozen clear; 2 snappy drills this month suggests he is feeling pretty good about himself; respect.   Leedstobeaver Live in the debut, but he is hooking other speed today and could find these waters much deeper; sire commands $3500 fee and that was this racer's purchase price; would have liked to have seen a local spin.   U S Citizen Never kicked last time when out in marooned slot; he has had plenty of chances to get that 2nd win; this is the first time he has been offered for sale and Bejarano enticed; with his style, backers have to hope a duel occurs and the leaders wilt.   Aspirational Gelding has never run a poor race; he has some semblance of speed and could show even more with the blinks today; up for sale and in for $50K less than purchase price; winner of last has won an allowance race at Arapahoe since; Miller has had some big meets down here over the years; surprise package.   Green Tag (IRE) He carried 11 more pounds when he won on the turf all out last year; 5/10 show horse took a maiden $40K claimer next out, then was 4th beaten a length and a half in a $40K starter; should be getting involved late.   Run Hide Needed slop and 4 foes when earning the only win; love the spacing of the return drills accentuated by the best of 34 bullet a week ago; hung wide in local debut and note he ran well when beaten less than a length in the return effort in 2013; fresh and dangerous.   No Ma'am He got away with soft splits in the lone win but that debut suggests he has a shot to fire fresh; show horse in last won next out in a $40K optional by a head with a 77 Beyer; in for $125K less than purchase price; would expect runner to be on the muscle since he's been away.   Justification The spotty race record is a concern; this is the first time he's been in a claimer since 2012 when this rider was up; with his style, things will have to break just right up front.   Redistribute He's repaid his $1,000 purchase price by almost 30 fold so far; he's trained fast for this, has legit speed, and like the fact he came down and got a feel of the surface on the 14th; rates long look in all the slots.   Will True Up Lone win came on turf; stakes placed at 2, wonder if something just went awry in the Baffle in 2013?; he had to hit the bench and is seeking to regain top form; drawn right, should sit a nice stalk and pounce trip; contention goes deep. - Brian Mulligan Race 5 Inexcess Time Training steadily at Los Al for this debut try on the polytrack; sire Indian Charlie went 4 for 5 in his career, most notably winning the '98 Santa Anita Derby; offspring of dam My Time Now are combined 11 of 57 lifetime (3 of 15 on synthetic); trainer Solis is 0 for 12 over the past five years with 2-year-old first time starters at Del Mar.   Bench Warrant Sire Street Boss was prolific on synthetic surfaces in his career, winning 7 of 13 and banking $831K - all on synth; while the dam was pretty solid on the track herself (4 for 15, $67K), her offspring have been dismal to date (1 for 25 lifetime, 0 for 10 on synthetic).   Verraco Old Fashioned has done nice work when it comes to producing 2-year-olds that sprint on synthetic (3 for 18, 9 foals); it should be noted that trainer Mullins isn't too strong when it comes to juvenile first time starters (5 for 51 over the past five years); maybe going to need a start under his belt?   Social Request Although this guy didn't do much running (really any for that matter) in his debut, it's worth noting that he took a decent amount of money that day; sire Lookin At Lucky has come out of the gates firing as a stallion (5 for 15 with all 2YO starters); half-sister has a career record of 5 for 17 and is the only other foal to date of the dam; expecting much better effort.   Bold Bid Exiting the same heat that Social Request did on 6/20 at SA, he's another that took money and didn't do much; son of the late, great Pulpit sold in March for $260K, so connections certainly think highly of him; dam earned nearly $150K in her career but only visited the winner's circle twice from 19 tries.   Remo Hard Spun only 6 for 61 with juvenile sprinters on synthetic over the past five years; dam was nothing spectacular on the track (1 of 8 lifetime, career best 83 BSF); the back-to-back gate drills are generally encouraging before a debut, and the fact that he showed a bit of zip in the latest is a positive.   Scorpious Trainer James Cassidy isn't known for his best work with first time starters, but it should be looked at as a positive that Mike Smith takes the mount at first asking; Tale of the Cat 2-year-olds are 109 for 633 over the past five years; dam produced legit runners in Forest Secrets, Rumor Has It and Bajan Tryst; the latest three furlong bullet out of the gate would suggest that this guy is going immediately.   Discreet Prince Out of stakes winning mare Gowestforgold and being by G1 winning sprinter Discreetly Mine, this colt has some nice bloodlines; Diodoro has had runners cranked and ready to go immediately out of the box in the past; wouldn't be a complete shocker if he's got this one ready to go today.   Bollywood $700,000 purchase in April, this son of Bernardini has been working up a storm recently; love to see the three furlong blowout happen here on the poly as opposed to the dirt at SA; pedigree would seem to lean more toward distance, but if anybody can have a 2YO ready it's Baffert; worth noting a sibling went 1 for 1 on synthetic; Obvious contender.   American Sailor Trainer Cody Autrey's numbers with 2-year-old first time starters are superb (5 for 15, $5.14 ROI over the past five years; shouldn't be lost that one of the top riders Talamo takes the mount here, and when the two of them team up at Del Mar the ROI is strong ($4.38 in '13/'14); player here. - Matt Bernier   Race 6 Spot Play PREMIER STEPS (#1, 9-2) is the class on the grass, being a stakes winner that comes off a couple competitive tries in graded stakes company; beaten just four lengths with a troubled trip in the Grade 1 Gamely last out. -Byron King Premier Steps (IRE) Drops out of the G1 ranks to face restricted stakes foes in her course debut; filly ran rather well at slightly shorter trips in her prior couple of tries and the inside draw should afford her a good spot from the bell in this heat; looms a big threat today.   Yahilwa Tries turf for the first time in the states after failing to threaten G1 types on dirt; filly was pretty good on the main track a couple of starts back and she did run ok on the lawn overseas last year but she spots these plenty of surface experience; prefer to back others on the win end.   Ann of the Dance Makes her first start in the state while returning from 7 months on the shelf for this new outfit; mare was ok on the green back East last year but don't know that she fits very well at this level first time back from the break; just watching her in here.   Dancingtothestars Statebred didn't have enough left late against G2 stakes foes in her return from the freshening at Santa Anita; she is an open company SW and she earned her career best number on the local sod last summer; expecting she'll be tighter for this maybe the local return helps perk her up some.   Beatrice (GB) Import makes her first start since late last summer while going for a solid outfit that names the circuit's top pilot for her stateside debut; filly has run well fresh in the past and she's certainly been a solid middle distance runner overseas; expecting she'll be set to come out running here.   Moone's My Name (GB) G3 SP are didn't have enough to go on late at Santa Anita last time but the barn does do a nice job with its runners second off the break; filly has no local experience but she owns numbers that fit quite well in this spot and certainly warrants consideration on her best.   Rhagori (GB) Gets a new pilot while dropping out of a G1 heat in which she set the pace but saved little for the drive; mare ran well against cheaper in her prior few starts on the Santa Anita lawn, but don't know that she's good enough right now to step with some of these.   Spring Bloom Local winner makes just her third start of the season in this spot; she didn't have enough to offer late against a cheaper bunch last time and though she may move forward here, don't know that she's good enough to win at this level; should be in a spot to have every shot to prove us wrong here.   Perfecta Turns back off the surface marathon try in her Santa Anita finale; she did earn both of her scores over the local sod and maybe the local return helps get her going, but it's been a while since she's seen the winner's circle anywhere; can't make a serious case for her against this bunch.   Cozze Up Lady Gets a switch to the Kid while making her first start for this barn in her local return; mare has been sprinting on different surfaces of late but she loves the lawn and ran a big one here last summer; her speed should have her in a good spot from the bell; contender.   Bee Brave (GB) Steps up to the stakes ranks after a solid late running effort in her second back from the break; filly has only run a handful of times so it wouldn't be a shock to see her improve, but she'll need to in order to threaten with these more seasoned rivals.   Warren's Veneda She's been ok on the lawn in the past and now she'll stretch out off a sprint try on the Santa Anita dirt; Cal bred has been stepping with stakes foes for a while now and she could find herself a little closer to the top early, but this outside starting slot won't help her all that much.   Pearlside (FR) AE adds shades for her first start in 11 months when making her stateside debut in the local G1 Oaks last summer; 4 year old competed in the G1 French Oaks last year and didn't embarrass herself despite trouble with those top fillies; worth a good look if she goes.   Need You Now (IRE) AE will start from the outside slot if she draws into this heat; she'll go first time for a new barn in her return from nearly 8 months on the shelf, but she ran in the Oaks here last summer as well and has won fresh; catches older for the initial time if scratches allow her to go. - Steve Grabowski   Race 7 Thesheetsguy Took limited action in educational debut; 1 for 9 dam banked about $15K and the win was routing; lone half bro to race Lake Brilliant took 2 of 14, earned $25K; must hurry.   Power Crazed Empire Maker about 11% with debuters in a 393-runner survey; sire took debut at 2, won Belmont on way to near $2 million wallet; stakes winning 3 for 11 dam won over $140K, all the wins came at 2; lone half sis Lady Cohiba took 3 stakes, won debut at 2, banked over $330K; drilling like a serious horse.   Kings Adventure Don't be too harsh about last as they went :21 and small change early; blinkers off, like they were for solid debut; 2 for 9 dam earned nearly $40K; this is her first to race; don't sell too short.   Secure Divdend Has had trouble breaking sharply; SP 1 for 3 dam took debut at 2, earned nearly $50K; all 3 siblings won; 2 won at 2, one in the debut; kin Stourbridge Lion won nearly $100K taking 3 of 11; will be rolling late if at all.   Gold Chaser Runner cost $200K and debuted for Baffert for $50K; that just doesn't add up; dam was unraced; lone half bro Barraaq took 3 off 22, earned almost $50K; the hotter the pace the better for this runner.   Mr. Itkins Finally off the rail and the cut back effort last time was decent; 3 for 7 dam won nearly $45K; the half bro to win Bullet Catcher took 5 of 20, earned over $100K; can never dismiss this kind of speed.   Turnover Big Brown about 12% with debuters in a 110-runner survey; sire took only start at 2, won first two legs of the Triple Crown, banked over $3.6 million; SP 2 for 11 dam earned almost $50K; lone half sis Miss Mischief took a stakes, won 3 of 10, earned over $150K; family owned runner got a feel of the surface in the gate spin.   He's a Bling Hand might have been forced from the rail on the sealed muddy strip; like the renewed energy he flashed on the 11th; 4 for 12 dam banked $40K; 3 of 4 siblings won; top kin Officer Prado won twice at 2, banked nearly $120K; this runner looks live.   Southern Freedom Like fact he drilled this far and he was far from disgraced in the 3 chalk flops here last year; SP dam lost 5 times; lone half bro Reconstruction took a stakes, won 4 of 16, earned nearly $120K; fresh and very dangerous.   Relative Time Soph has trained steadily for this including the local spin last Tuesday; a slice may be the ceiling here.   Cognoscente This is a tough sell after being beaten double digits every time; the family is solid with several 6-figure earners in the family; not sold on chances.   Mr. Pete Got Even Time to Get Even 2 for 19 with debuters; Grade 3 winning sire didn't run at 2, banked $150K taking 3 of 16; 2 for 26 dam earned just over a grand a start; 2 of 3 siblings won but they were just 2 for 65 combined; would be careful here. - Brian Mulligan   Race 8 Giant Ego Switches surfaces for his local return after holding third money down the hill at this level; speedy gray draws inside while returning to synthetic footing and he was pretty good over the Tapeta surface up North earlier in the year; don't know that he's as good as some of these, but his speed should have him in a good spot from the bell and that warrants him a look.   Caminetto Baffert colt started to get the hang of things later on in his sophomore campaign, but after back to back scores was sent to the bench and has been idle for the past 21 months; like the versatility he showed pre-break and he did break his maiden over the local main track a couple of summers back; barn fires first time back and this guy's recent drills couldn't be much quicker.   Guns Loaded He's another who has been running down the hill of late and now he'll return to footing over which he broke his maiden last summer; sophomore kept some decent company in Arkansas earlier in the year, but don't know that he'll be able to step with some of these in the lane; prefer others for the top spot.   Royal F J Hard hitting 7 year old has been on his game at the level of late but he's been turfing down the Santa Anita hill and now he'll try synthetic footing over which he's yet to hit the board in 3 career spins; he's been pretty consistent on the Beyer scale which means he usually brings what he's got and maybe in his current form the surface won't trouble him; can prove an exotics threat from off the pace.   Holy Lute Found himself fighting on the front end while making his second start at the level at Santa Anita last month and the effort took its toll on him late; cut back to this trip should help a runner who both broke his maiden and took a 2 turn stake over the track last summer; one to consider.   Syndicated Takes the next step up the class ladder after being given a little extra time off a late running score in his Santa Anita finale; gelding broke his maiden over synthetic footing so he should handle the surface switch and the pace in front of him should at least be honest.   Tree of Life Goes first time off this outfit's claim while making his first start of the year here; gelding wasn't bad behind one of these on the main track last year and he did break his maiden sprinting from well out of it here 2 summers back; working steadily for his return but still have to think he needs one.   Drover Crazy Should be better with his first start in nearly 5 months behind him and he did run well behind a pretty good one here last summer; gelding showed a solid tracking gear in his score 2 back at Golden Gate and he should be able to sit a similar trip in this spot; consider.   Diamond Bachelor Hood comes off for his return from 3 months on the shelf while trying synthetic footing for the initial time in this spot after skipping a start in the Opening Day Oceanside Stakes; sophomore has yet to tackle one turn racing, either, so have to think they are looking at this one as a spring board to a longer event next time; looking elsewhere for the winner. - Steve Grabowski   Race 9 San Clemente Handicap by Michael Hammersly When Room Service shipped to the West Coast for the Grade 1 American Oaks at Santa Anita May 31 she won easily, and in doing so exposed the SoCal 3-year-old fillies as a nice bunch but maybe not up to the best elsewhere in the country. So, when MY CONQUESTADORY goes in the gate for Saturday’s Grade 3 San Clement at Del Mar she’s liable to put an exclamation point on things. Last summer MY CONQUESTADORY made quite a splash, easily winning her debut in Woodbine’s Grade 2 Summer Stakes. Not only was it just her debut, but she was asked to do it routing, in a graded stakes, and vs. males – and she handled the assignment with aplomb. She then went to Keeneland and easily won the Grade 1 Alcibiades on synthetic footing to absolutely confirm her quality. That sent her to Santa Anita for the Grade 1 Breeders’ Cup Juvenile Fillies Turf. Despite a brutal far outside post (No. 14) she was able to grab the lead in midstretch but then faltered a bit late to finish fourth. The one-two finishers were thoroughly high-class European imports. She got plenty of time off and resurfaced at her Woodbine home base, in the Grade 3 Selene on the Polytrack there. She set the pace and battled gamely to the wire to finish a sharp second, beaten just a nose. It was a superb way to get back into action and gives her a foundation from which to move forward. That can start here. A daughter of Artie Schiller, it’s no surprise she loves the turf; daddy won the Grade 1 Breeders’ Cup Mile. Yes, she’s stuck on the far outside again here but it’s not quite as far outside (Post 12) and the mile configuration on the turf course here may give her a bit more room to get up and over. Also, her tactical speed and versatility can help her avoid getting hung out to dry on that first turn. To signal her readiness, she’s been working lights-out at Woodbine to prepare for this, including a 5-furlong bullet there July 9 (1:00.60B). She can go to the lead, she can stalk or she sit well back and finish, whatever rider Victor Espinoza (after winning the Espy for top jock maybe we should call him Victor Espy-noza) deems necessary. While she figures to go favored the far outside post may scare some players off. Also, another scary import (SANDIVA) could siphon some money away, meaning it’s possible MY CONQUESTADORY could go off in the 4-1 range, which with her talent, class and versatility is quite palatable. It’s another raider who has appeal to fill a slot underneath MY CONQUESTADORY in the exotics. SANDIVA invades from Europe and showed her quality when winning the Group 3 Nell Gwyn in England April 16 (beating 14 rivals). That was enough to earn a shot at the Group 1 1,000 Guineas May 4 where she ran ninth. They still believed in her as she then took a swing at the Group 1 Coronation June 20. She sat midpack and kept to her task nicely to be a solid fifth, beaten just 2 1/4 lengths. Any of the four who beat her that day would be formidable here. So, if she shipped well and handles her new surroundings she can be a danger with what is surely a significant class drop. DIVERSY HARBOR has done nothing wrong in five starts. She won her first two, then chased Nashoba’s Gold in a pair of Santa Anita turf stakes, finishing second to that top-class filly in the Grade 3 Providencia and third to her in the Grade 2 Honeymoon. She finished well to be second to Room Service in the aforementioned Grade 1 American Oaks. She blasted home to win the China Doll March 8, her only prior try at a mile so she is certainly be a late danger – though again, the feeling here is a couple imports may be a tad stronger. ISTANFORD has won three of her six turf starts. While she’s never raced here she’s run well on Arlington turf, Fair Grounds turf, Tampa turf and Churchill turf, so odds are she’ll handle this place. She has speed and a tough of class. She led all the way to win the Grade 3 Arlington Classic on turf May 24, beating the boys in the process. She then set the pace before tiring to seventh in the Grade 3 Regret on turf at Churchill June 14, but she set a brisk pace that day and paid the price. There isn’t much speed in here so she may be able to take command early, back them up and hang around to be involved in the exotics.   Vulnerable Favorite DIVERSY HARBOR (#4, 7-2) opens as the tepid ML favorite as she’s done nothing wrong in five starts, finishing in the top-3 in each. She’s freshened and cuts back to a mile, and the only other time she tried this trip she won. That being said, while she’s shown talent, he was no match for import Room Service in the Grade 1 American Oaks May 31 and must deal with two scary imports again here (My Conquestadory, Sandiva) who may be as tough or tougher than Room Service. -Michael Hammersly   Tiz the Key She's run well in her two most recent starts over turf and she might not mind the sharp turn back in distance for this; she might find herself sitting a comfortable ground saving trip right in behind the early speed.   Tepin She's a G3 winner racing over dirt but she is going to need to improve over what she showed in her turf debut in her latest outing if she's planning on being a player in this spot; she's the 'B' horse in here for the Casse barn.   Miss Machiavelli She's a stakes winner racing over turf, but she was beaten by a couple of today's rivals in her latest outing, and she will need to take her game to another level to have a chance at the top prize against this tough bunch.   Diversy Harbor Her dam has been a strong turf producer and this filly has yet to show us that she knows how to run a bad race from five turf starts; she was last seen earing a G1 stakes placing and she has to be considered a top contender in this G2 event.   Concave She's a G2 winner racing over the synthetic surface here, but this filly did her best running in her first three career starts, and she might be in need of some class relief to help give her a chance to get back on top of her game.   Sushi Empire She's developed a nice level of consistency to her game, but she was beaten by a few of today's rivals in her latest outing, and her best effort doesn't appear to be strong enough to threaten the top contenders in here.   Sandiva (IRE) She's won half of her eight starts and this multiple group stakes winner commands plenty of respect while making her first start in America; maybe she's better off sprinting than routing, but she certainly adds a good deal of intrigue to this event.   Istanford If anyone in here is going to lead this field every step of the way, this might be the one to do it, and like the idea of her turning back in distance to a flat mile; there is a little bit of early speed signed on, but it doesn't look like the early pace will be overly fast, and she's in the capable hands of Bejarano.   Morning Fix She looks like she can prove to be an early pace player if she chooses to be, but it's hard to expect her to be involved in the running early on when considering what she's shown racing from off the pace in her three turf starts.   Sheza Smoke Show She's done nothing but display sharp form through her first six starts and she enters this event fresh off of a G3 score at Santa Anita; improving 3-year-old must be respected with Talamo in the irons.   Tiz Kissable She ran well off of a very fast early pace in the China Doll three starts back, but her form outside of that performance hasn't been all that strong; runner up from latest won next out at Lrc on 7/11 going 1m vs. starter alw. rivals with a 75 Beyer.   My Conquestadory She's the only G1 winner in this race and she earned that win in her second career start after taking down a G2 event over turf in her career debut; she was beaten as a heavy odds-on favorite when last seen, but have to look for her to be ready for a top try while shipping in for this, and her recent workouts look strong. - Brian Pochman   Race 10 Fighter Squadron Tries an open claiming field while making his local debut off a solid going away score at odds on against Arlington Park limited winners; gelding draws inside for his first crack on synthetic footing since the debut maiden score in Ireland but he doesn't look to catch a particularly tough bunch and does lure a capable journeyman pilot; fresh face warrants an exotics look.   Cardio Royale Tries the main track over which he's won in the past after offering little in his return on the Santa Anita lawn; gray makes his run from well out of it so he'll need pace in front of him and this barn has won just once all year; prefer to side with others on the win end.   Dress Code Fresh 8 year old was beaten chalk when re-claimed by this outfit and given some time; he was quite good in victory going long 2 back on dirt and though he didn't do much locally he has run well on synthetic footing in the past; sharp dirt drill earlier in the month says he's return to return running; contender.   Monastic Hood comes off after again showing little while making his first start off the barn's claim; they'll risk him for half of what hey shelled out for him less than 2 months back and that doesn't look to be a very positive sign; lone synthetic try in Kentucky last fall wasn't bad.   Usbek Thunder (BRZ) Tries synthetic footing for the initial time after taking a step back on the Santa Anita lawn second off the freshening; he hasn't been a serious threat in most of his turf tries this year and there's not much to suggest he'll go a lot better on this footing; looking elsewhere.   Accelerant Does his running from well out of it and hasn't been a big player in either of his last 2 cracks; 7 year old does own a score over the local main track and he should have some conditioning from his recent turf tries, though, and maybe that's enough to get him in the exotics mix at a price here.   Harlan's Vitesse New face makes his first start out West while stretching out to try a route of ground for the initial time today; barn is on a mission at the stand and they boast terrific numbers with their new acquisitions; sprinter may have the inside track to the top today and his pedigree suggests the added trip will be within his scope; one to catch.   Smart Promotion Goes first off the claim for an outfit that boasts some recent luck with this type; he's working well on dirt of late, but he's had his issues and has yet to try synthetic footing; prefer to just watch him as he drops below the price they paid for him last time.   Mind the Master Gets back to synthetic footing over which he's hit the board in both tries without winning; gelding is another dropping below the price this barn paid for him 2 back, but he does figure to be closer to the top with the hillside try behind him and he's run well going long in the past.   Barney Rebel (IRE) Hood comes off for his first start of the year for a barn that boasts some recent luck with this type; gelding is working well of late at Santa Anita for this but it has been quite a while since he's won and his synthetic record leaves something to be desired; look of a longshot today.   Foolhardy AE will get Bejarano if he's able to make his local debut in this spot; he hasn't been very good in his last few starts, but he did win over synthetic footing at Keeneland and maybe the return to a similar surface helps him get going here; still, it won't be easy from out here.   Candy for Debbie AE was beaten chalk on the dirt at Pleasanton last month and now he'll look to get back to synthetic footing in his local debut; 6 year old is rather consistent on the figure scale and he's handy enough to secure a spot within tracking range from the bell; draw is not bargain but he's capable of getting in the mix for a piece of this if he draws in. - Steve Grabowski   Race 11 Spot Play LOUFOQUE (#14, 3-1) flashed ample talent when introduced to this game last Oct. 5, running 2nd down the hill at SA and 2nd routing on turf there Oct. 17 (behind Full Ransom who would later become a turf SW). She hasn’t been seen since but Mr. Mandella is terrific off the bench, this gal has worked smartly for her return and Mandella adds blinkers (2 for last 8, 25%, first-time blinkers). There’s pedigree to bolster her cause, too, as she’s kin to Persistently (won Grade 1 Personal Ensign, 3-time Grade 1 placed). She’ll be stuck way outside if she gets to play but she’s already shown versatility in her lone 2 starts. -Michael Hammersly   Freethinker Had excuse of the slop in the debut and at least she kept trying in the Tampa finale; stakes placed 3 for 17 dam earned nearly $85K, was grass only; both siblings won on grass once, they earned about $75K together; may like the beach.   Smart Typical Soph has drilled fast for this fray; 2 for 4 dam was dirt sprint only; 4 of 5 siblings won; a couple won on grass and banked 6 figures; could need softer to shine.   Burning Arch Connections thought enough of her to try the stakes; first two races were solid and the winner of the debut repeated in a $25K GG optional with a 76 Beyer; stakes placed 2 for 13 dam earned nearly $100K, lost only attempt on grass; the half sis to win cashed twice on grass; major player.   Wild Caroline At least she has some turf experience; place horse in the debut graduated next out and the winner of the bow took a $50K Pomona stakes next out with a 69 Beyer; 2 for 13 dam earned nearly $100K, lost only turf out; 4 of 6 siblings won including double turf winner and over $100K earner Tiger Willie; expect her to flash more speed this time.   Garnisheed Wages Don't be too harsh about last as the hillside is one tricky course; SP 2 for 19 dam earned over $100K, was 0 for 2 on grass; 2 of 3 siblings won; the one that tried grass was 2nd once in 4 turf outs; like this progression; she closed a bit in the debut and then was close up in last; respect.   Venetian Off slow in the debut, overmatched, and mirror races in last pair; winner 9/2 last year repeated in a $101K stakes; Grade 3 placed 1 for 8 dam earned about $40K, did win on grass; lone half sis took 2 dirt sprints, was 2nd twice in best turf results; can't be dismissed.   Penny Sixpence (FR) Was in the good hands of Gosden in England; she was bothered in the first 2 starts; dam third in best moment; lone full bro Penny's Picnic took a Group 2, banked over $250K in France, was strictly grass; Bejarano enticed and he's 3 for 7 for Drysdale the last year; nice.   Bourbon N Burley Educated in the Anita opener, note runner cost $7500; sire was grass only, took a Grade 1, banked over $1.5 million, didn't run at 2; G3 winning dam took 16 of 40, earned $1.1 million, lost only turf out; 3 of 5 siblings won; one was a double turf winner and top kin Not Bourbon was a millionaire; got a feeling we have not seen the best of this one.   Sweet as a Rose A couple of solid drills since posting the career Beyer last time; there is a grass winner in the tree but that runner was 1 for 32; legit threat in a solid nightcap.   Bijoux Bet like a good thing and he just got rolling a tad too late; dam was 0 for 5; lone half bro took one dirt sprint; love the spacing of the return drills; rates long look in all the slots.   Art of War A. P. Warrior 2 for 57 with first-time turfers; G2 winning sire took debut at 2, won 4 of 13, banked nearly $550K, won on grass once, the first time he tasted the stuff; dam out of the money thrice; lone half bro Fleet Eagle took 3 of 18, earned $110K, lost twice on grass; has a condition edge on some in here.   Star Act Filly has teased several times and is due to punch it on in; 1/18 place horse graduated in a maiden $75K seller, beat N1X foes, then was third in a Grade 3 beaten over 3 before a pop and stop try in a Grade 2; backers can point to fact top kin Guest Star was a double turf winner and over $100K earner; will be rolling hard late.   Quick Navigator At least she has shown she can pass horses; 1 for 5 dam won on grass, banked $55K; lone half sis to race Majestic Minister did win on grass once; not impossible chore.   Loufoque Both starts last year were solid; 5th and 7th finishers in last graduated at this level next out and the winner repeated in the Grade 3 Miesque; dam s lone win was a route; 1 of 2 siblings won; that racer, Persistently, took a G1, earned over $525K, lost only grass attempt; fresh and dangerous. - Brian Mulligan
