Del Mar carryover reaches $717,342

Steve Andersen|Jul 31, 2004

DEL MAR, Calif. - A two-day carryover of $717,342 highlights at Del Mar, a card that features the return of top handicap star Pleasantly Perfect after a four-month break.

Sunday's program starts at 2 p.m. The pick six covers the fourth through ninth races.

There are only a few changes in the pick six, which includes a foreign shipper in the first leg that will be a key on many tickets.

Jipapibaquigrafo (don't sweat the spelling, just ask for No. 7) is the 4-5 morning-line favorite in the first leg, an optional claimer over 1 3/8 miles on turf. Now trained by Bobby Frankel, he was stakes-placed in France last year.

The fifth race, run over a mile for $10,500 to $12,500 female claimers, is more wide open. Charlies Good Girl is the 3-1 favorite, but Lori M'love (9-2), Danmark, Linda Eder and Aussie Girl (all 6-1) will attract support.

The sixth race is a maiden race over 5 1/2 furlongs for California-bred 2-year-old fillies. Excessively Nice and Gentle Charmer are scratched, leaving 12 starters. Miss C Continental, House of Danzig and Memorette will be well-backed. Miss C Continental was second at Pleasanton on July 3.

In the seventh race, Tikkun is scratched from an optional claimer over 1 1/16 miles on turf. Patriot's Pass, who has won last two starts, will be favored in his turf debut. American Son, a close fourth in his last start on May 27, is a top contender.

Pleasantly Perfect will be keyed on many tickets when he starts in the ninth race, the $250,000 San Diego Handicap over 1 1/16 miles. Pleasantly Perfect won the 2003 Breeders' Cup Classic. In his last start in the $6 million Dubai World Cup last March, Pleasantly Perfect scored an outstanding win.

His opponents in the San Diego include During, a stakes winner at Santa Anita in January; Taste of Paradise, who won this race last year; and Choctaw Nation, who is unbeaten in four starts and is making his stakes debut.

The final race is a six-furlong maiden race. Cyclotron, second at this meeting last year in his most recent start, returns after a layoff of more than 11 months. Golden Souvenir, third on July 3 as a heavy favorite, will feature on many tickets.
