Del Mar has increased purses for maiden races and some allowance races for its 31-day summer meeting, which runs from from July 21 to Sept. 10. Purses for maiden races have been raised to $82,000, from $70,000 in 2021 and $80,000 last summer, according to racing secretary David Jerkens. The same category was worth $76,000 in 2021 and $86,000 last year. Last summer, all-sources handle rose 1.5 percent compared to the 2021 summer meeting, allowing for the increased purses. The track will publish its 39-race summer stakes schedule later this month, according to a statement released on Thursday. The highlight will be the $1 million Pacific Classic on Sept. 2. The summer season will cover eight weekends, with racing Friday through Sunday on July 21-23 and Sept 8-10; Thursday through Sunday on July 27-30 and each weekend through August; and Thursday-Monday, Labor Day, from Aug. 31 to Sept. 4. :: Want to learn more about handicapping and wagering?
