Del Mar boosts maiden, allowance purses for summer meet
Del Mar has increased purses for maiden races and some allowance races for its 31-day summer meeting, which runs from from July 21 to Sept. 10.
Purses for maiden races have been raised to $82,000, from $70,000 in 2021 and $80,000 last summer, according to racing secretary David Jerkens.
A first-condition allowance race will be worth $83,000, compared to $72,000 in 2021 and $82,000 in 2022.
Classified allowance races will be worth $88,000. The same category was worth $76,000 in 2021 and $86,000 last year.
Last summer, all-sources handle rose 1.5 percent compared to the 2021 summer meeting, allowing for the increased purses.
The track will publish its 39-race summer stakes schedule later this month, according to a statement released on Thursday. The highlight will be the $1 million Pacific Classic on Sept. 2.
The summer season will cover eight weekends, with racing Friday through Sunday on July 21-23 and Sept 8-10; Thursday through Sunday on July 27-30 and each weekend through August; and Thursday-Monday, Labor Day, from Aug. 31 to Sept. 4.
