Del Mar sustained approximately 2.5 inches of rain on Sunday and early Monday from the remnants of Hurricane Hilary, a storm that caused the cancellation of racing on Sunday and forced significant work in the stable area to prevent extensive flooding. Racing will resume on Thursday, but it was unclear on Monday whether the turf course will be used that day, according to racing secretary David Jerkens. “It’s too early to tell,” Jerkens said. “We’re getting out of the storm now and we’ll see.” Turf workouts typically held on Thursday have been canceled, the track announced on Monday morning. “Hopefully we can get back to normal training on Wednesday,” Jerkens said. “All-in-all, it could have been worse.” Most of the rain fell Sunday. Rainfall totals were significantly lower than some inland areas in Southern California which sustained flooding. The loss of Sunday’s nine-race program will lead to additional races being offered before the summer meeting ends Sept. 10. Jerkens said the tentative plan is to add a race to the Saturday and Sunday programs this weekend, and hold 11 and 10 races on those days. The $150,000 Solana Beach Stakes for California-bred fillies and mares on turf was postponed from Sunday to this Friday. Del Mar’s barn area is at sea level, which led the track to relocate some horses stabled in pens and auxiliary stables to permanent stables in the barn area. Some areas of the stables had significant standing water near shedrows. Maintenance crews were using pumps to clear the water on Monday, according to track president Josh Rubinstein. “Things held up pretty well,” Rubinstein said. “Some of the lower-level areas were affected.” Approximately 80 horses were briefly relocated to San Luis Rey Downs or Los Alamitos. Los Alamitos canceled its Sunday Quarter Horse program because of the tropical storm. Areas near Los Alamitos sustained 2.6 inches of rain from the storm. :: Want to learn more about handicapping and wagering? Check out DRF's Handicapping 101 and Wagering 101 pages.
