Exaulted won the Grade 1 Shoemaker Mile at Santa Anita in a career-defining performance in 2023, but will miss the same race on Monday, trainer Peter Eurton said on Friday. “We’re going to wait and find another race for him,” Eurton said. Exaulted has not raced since he finished second to Du Jour in the Grade 2 Del Mar Mile last September. He missed the Breeders’ Cup Mile at Santa Anita last November after being scratched on race week. :: Access morning workout reports straight from the tracks and get an edge with DRF Clocker Reports “It was a big task to take on a Grade 1,” Eurton said of the comeback. Eurton said Exaulted will have his 2024 debut in early summer. The absence of Exaulted leaves a field of 11 expected runners in the $300,000 Shoemaker Mile – Air Force Red, Conclude, Dominican Pioneer, Du Jour, Easter, Funtastic Again, Goliad, Irideo, Johannes, There Goes Harvard, and War At Sea. Air Force Red is also entered for Sunday’s Grade 3 Daytona Stakes at about 6 1/2 furlongs on the hillside turf course. Trainer Leonard Powell wrote in a text message that he and the partnership that owns Air Force Red - Eclipse Thoroughbred Partners and Holly Golightly - are debating which race best suits the 6-year-old, who was a game second in the Grade 3 San Francisco Mile on turf at Golden Gate Fields on April 27. The Shoemaker Mile is one of three stakes on an 11-race program at Santa Anita on Monday, along with the Grade 1 Gamely Stakes for fillies and mares at 1 1/8 miles on turf, and the Grade 2 Hollywood Gold Cup at 1 1/4 miles on dirt. The Powell-trained Anisette will have her 2024 debut in the $300,000 Gamely. She won the Grade 1 American Oaks at 1 1/4 miles on turf in December in her last start. Anisette is part of a projected field of nine in the Gamely along with Forever After All, Justique, Linda’s Gift, Nadette, Olivia Maralda, Ruby Nell, Uncorked, and Yerwanthere. Mr Fisk and Judge Miller, the first two finishers of the Grade 3 Californian Stakes on April 21, are scheduled to start in the $200,000 Gold Cup. Other expected runners are Arrowthegreat, Ashcroft, Mixto, Oviatt Class, Reincarnate, and Subsanador. Siegel to become oddsmaker Jeff Siegel, a longtime handicapper and television commentator in Southern California, will begin writing the morning-line at Santa Anita at the track’s autumn meeting, Santa Anita announced on Friday. Siegel replaces Jon White, who is retiring as oddsmaker at the conclusion of the current meeting on June 16. Siegel is a well-known figure for his work as a public handicapper and for his television work on Santa Anita’s in-house simulcast programs. Santa Anita’s autumn meeting begins on Sept. 27. :: Want to learn more about handicapping and wagering? Check out DRF's Handicapping 101 and Wagering 101 pages.
