Deep Impact wins at Nakayama

Alan Shuback|Apr 18, 2005

Deep Impact made a deep impression at Nakayama on Sunday with a 2 1/2-length victory in the $2.18 million Satsuki Sho, which serves as the 1 1/4-mile Japanese 2000 Guineas.

A Sunday Silence colt, the odds-on Deep Impact maintained his unbeaten record with a powerful late run under Yutaka Take that brought him from far back in the 18-runner field to prevail over 123-1 shot Six Sense. Admire Japan and Meiner Recolte, second and third behind Deep Impact last time in the Grade 2 Japanese 2000 Guineas Trial, followed in third and fourth. The winning time on firm ground was a swift 1:59.20.

Deep Impact appears certain to stay the 1 1/2 miles of the Tokyo Yushun, or Japanese Derby, which will be run at Tokyo Racecourse on May 29.
