Debut winner Repo Man to run next in Zuma Beach Stakes

The 2-year-old colt Repo Man has earned a start in the Grade 3 Zuma Beach Stakes at Santa Anita on Oct. 4 after overcoming trouble to win his debut in a maiden race on turf at Del Mar on Thursday.
Ridden by Umberto Rispoli, Repo Man, who paid $5 as the favorite, closed from fourth of nine to win the five-furlong race by 1 1/2 lengths over 17-1 King Anunoby. The first two finishers are trained by Michael McCarthy.
Repo Man raced in traffic in early stretch and closed with an appealing rally in the final furlong to catch King Anunoby.
“Repo Man was fast out of the gate when we broke him,” McCarthy said. “I thought he might be on the lead. He might have gotten more out of it” by racing from off the pace.
Repo Man, by first-crop stallion Golden Pal, races for John and Jerry Amerman and was purchased for $235,000 at the Fasig-Tipton Mid-Atlantic sale of 2-year-olds in training in May.
The $100,000 Zuma Beach Stakes is run at a mile on turf and designed as a prep race for the Breeders’ Cup Juvenile Turf at Keeneland on Oct. 30.
