Deauville yearling sale posts gains

Glenye Cain Oakford|Aug 18, 2008

The Arqana sale company's Deauville yearling sale in France concluded its four-day run Monday with gains across the board.

The auction sold 360 yearlings for a total of about $58,750,020, resulting in an average price of approximately $163,195 and a median of about $102,900. Considered in the local currency of euros, the gross was up 7 percent, average gained 13 percent, and median increased by 17 percent.

The buyback rate increasesd slightly, from 21 percent in 2007 to 23 percent this year.

The sale-topper was a Galileo colt out of Olimpic Girl, by Darshaan, that Nathan Tinkler's Australian-based Patinack Farm bought for 770,000 euros, about $1,131,900. Haras de Meautry consigned the colt, the first foal for his listed stakes-winning dam.

Figures down at OBS sale

A $200,000 Macho Uno filly topped the select session Monday at the Ocala Breeders' Sales Company's August yearling sale in Florida.

Figures fell sharply at the session compared with last season, and the buyback rate rose from 25 percent last year to 43 percent. Monday's select session sold 115 yearlings for $5,778,000, down 40 percent from last year's aggregate $9,679,500 for 167 yearlings. Average fell 13 percent, from $57,961 last year to $50,243. The $40,000 median was down 20 percent from last year's record of $50,000.

The session-topper was Hip No. 47, a gray or roan daughter of Top of the League that Dr. Robert Fishman bought from Hidden Brook Sales, agent. Hidden Brook consigned the filly on behalf of Frank Stronach's Adena Springs operation. Top of the League is a 10-year-old Lite the Fuse mare who so far has produced a pair of winners: Red Damask, by Awesome Again, and Reata's Vixen, by Sligo Bay.
