OLDSMAR, Fla. - Fernando De La Cruz got off to a quick start at last year’s meeting and had a big lead in the rider standings when he suffered a broken wrist in a spill in late December, an injury that ended his hopes for winning the riding title for the 2013-14 meeting. De La Cruz seemed to struggle to find his best form early in this meeting, but that’s all changed of late. De La Cruz posted a riding triple Saturday, then came back with two more wins Sunday and raised his win total for the meet to 14, which places him fourth in the standings. Antonio Gallardo continues to dominate the local rider race with 44 winners. Even with the time off from the injury, De La Cruz wound up 2014 with 178 wins, which followed a 202-win season in 2013. Three of De La Cruz’s recent wins came on horses trained by Jason DaCosta. DaCosta also has come to life of late with five winners from his last 14 starters. Kathy Guciardo also had a good day Saturday, saddling Lavallee Twist to win the sixth race, an optional-claiming route on the turf, then coming back to be second with Alajwad Dancer in the nightcap. Both horses came into their race off a four-month layoff. ◗ Jockey agent Steve Elsey, who has handled such notables as Rafael Bejarano and Willie Martinez, will begin working for Rosemary Homeister Jr. this week. Homeister, a fan favorite at Tampa, has nine wins at the meet to rank seventh in the rider standings.
