De Goddaughter best in Fillies and Mares Handicap

Chuck Dybdal|Jul 06, 2002

PLEASANTON, Calif. - De Goddaughter ($7) set the early pace then re-rallied when passed briefly by Lindsay Jean to win the $50,550 Alameda County Fillies and Mares Handicap at the Alameda County Fair on Saturday.

The third choice in the field of five, De Goddaughter was hooked by Lindsay Jean at the quarter pole. But she responded to left-handed whipping by jockey Jason Lumpkins and won the 1 1/16-mile race by 1.25 lengths in 1:41.68.

"I waited as long as I could," Lumpkins said. "(Lindsay Jean) headed me, but I knew I had more."

De Goddaughter, trained by local trainer Jeff Bonde and co-owned by Bonde and Golden State Racing, earned $27,610 to increase her earnings to $117,528 with five wins in 20 starts.
