Day gets Quarter Horse victory

Pat Day, the third-winningest rider in history with more than 8,700 Thoroughbred victories, picked up his first win aboard a Quarter Horse on Friday night at Sam Houston Race Park. Day rode in a 400-yard match race as part of his national tour benefiting the Racetrack Chaplaincy of America.

Before Friday's race, Day had a record of one second-place finish from 13 mounts in Quarter Horse races, all in 1973.

Day's mount, Turbo Tex ($3.80), proved much the best in the race. He broke sharply and drew off to a 2 3/4-length win over the favorite, First Time Streaker, who was ridden by Sam Houston's leading rider, Danny Lavergne.

Day has been named to ride two horses at Retama Park on Wednesday as he continues to tour on behalf of the chaplaincy.
