ELMONT, N.Y.- – Nobody should know more about Monday’s $125,000 Mike Lee Stakes at Belmont Park than jockey Dylan Davis, who rode three of the seven starters in the race to victories earlier this season at Aqueduct and who has chosen Lifetime of Chance for his mount in the seven-furlong dash for 3-year-old New York-breds. Davis rallied Lifetime of Chance from just off the pace to a neck decision over the 21-1 Bank Frenzy to capture the opening leg of the series, the 6 1/2-furlong Times Square Division, on April 22. The outing was the first for Lifetime of Chance since he was transferred to trainer Mark Casse’s barn following his eye-catching 16-length maiden win at Aqueduct five weeks later. Davis, who could have also ridden Radio Red or What’s Up Bro in the Mike Lee, said he opted for Lifetime of Chance in large part out of loyalty to Casse for the business he’s given him over the past couple of seasons. “Mark has given me a lot of opportunities including putting me on three stakes winners last year,” said Davis. “And I love the way the horse is training. I’ve worked him a couple of times and he gives me the impression he’s going to move forward off his last race. :: Bet the races on DRF Bets! But I can only ride one, and hopefully I’ll be on the best one on Monday.” Radio Red enters the Mike Lee with the best last-out Beyer Speed Figure in the field, a 90 earned for his 3 1/2-length entry-level allowance victory against older statebreds under Davis here on May 6. Radio Red withstood an early pace duel before pulling away with complete authority in the final furlong. “He’s not a need-the-lead type, he’s more of a closer, he kicks home,” said trainer Danny Gargan. “It took us a while to get him to focus on things, but he’s really a talented horse and I think he deserves a shot again these.” Davis also rode What’s Up Bro to a one-sided optional claiming and allowance win this winter for trainer Bob Klesaris as well as a third-place finish when making his stakes debut as the tepid 9-5 choice in the six furlong Damon Runyon in his most recent start. The pace should be an honest one in the Mike Lee with Looms Boldly, from the rail, and Florida invader Etnico, breaking on the extreme outside, expected to contest the early running. Looms Boldly has captured his last two starts including the Damon Runyon in gate-to-wire fashion while Etnico used similar tactics to win a well-graded maiden dash at Gulfstream Park in his last start on March 25. The Mike Lee will be his first try against New York-breds. Maker’s Candy, winner of the Gander Stakes going a mile at Aqueduct in late February, also demands plenty of respect returning against statebreds after finishing a well-beaten fifth behind Kentucky Derby runner-up Two Phil’s in the Grade 3 Jeff Ruby Steaks at Turfway two months earlier. Bouwerie Stakes A field of only five 3-year-old New York-bred fillies was entered to contest Monday’s opening event, the $125,000 Bouwerie Stakes. A compact lineup topped by Miracle, runner-up to Kentucky Oaks winner Pretty Mischievous in the Grade 2 Rachel Alexandra in her 2023 debut at the Fair Grounds, and open stakes winner Downtown Mischief. The later is one of two fillies trainer Linda Rice will run in the Bouwerie along with Les Bon Temps. Midtown Lights and Security Code complete the well-matched lineup. Miracle will take on statebreds for the first time this season after winning her maiden convincingly and finishing second in a pair of New York-bred stakes at 2. She is looking to rebound from a disappointing fifth-place finish as the 2-1 favorite in the Grade 2 Gulfstream Park Oaks on April 1. “She ran great at the Fair Grounds, but I was a little disappointed in her performance in the Gulfstream Oaks,” said Miracle’s trainer Todd Pletcher. “I thought she trained well enough going into that race to do better than she did. She’s been training very well since and we kind of toyed with the idea of going to the Black-Eyed Susan but opted instead to run her with the New York-breds, which seemed to make the most sense for now.” :: Take your handicapping to the next level and play with FREE DRF Past Performances - Formulator or Classic.  Downtown Mischief launched her career with three consecutive victories, including the Cicada Stakes at Aqueduct on March 18, before suffering her first and only defeat after being caught up in an early speed duel and readily run down late by Balpool as the 4-5 favorite in the Memories of Silver Stakes decided at a mile over the main track at Aqueduct on April 29. Les Bon Temps was a multiple stakes winner at 2 and notched her first victory in three tries in 2023 via the disqualification of Little Linzee in the Park Avenue Division of the New York Stallion Stakes series on April 23. :: Want to learn more about handicapping and wagering?
