Dark Nme is not only unbeaten in four races at Remington Park and Ruidoso Downs this year, she is not letting the competition get close. Dark Nme has won each of her races by at least 1 3/4 lengths and took her most recent start in a division of the Rainbow Futurity trials by 3 1/4 lengths on June 30 to earn the role of favorite in Sunday’s $1 million final at 400 yards at Ruidoso Downs. Trained by Santos Carrizales Jr., Dark Nme (pronounced enemy) had a qualifying time as outstanding as her margin of victory. Ridden by Francisco Calderon, Dark Nme was clocked in 19.61 seconds while racing into a 10 mph headwind. She was the only one of five qualifiers from 16 trials to break 20 seconds on June 30. “I thought she was going fast,” Calderon said. “I didn’t know she was going that fast. We were racing against the clock.” Dark Nme drew post 7 of 10 in the Rainbow Futurity, a field that includes Wired 440, who was second in the $1 million Ruidoso Futurity on June 11; trial race winner Midnight Politics, who was third in the $1.2 million Heritage Place Futurity at Remington Park on June 3; and trial race winner One Valiant Love, winner of the $100,000 Heritage Place consolation on June 3. Calderon, who won the 2021 Rainbow Futurity on Jess Savin Candy, was aboard Dark Nme for the first time in a race in the Rainbow trials. He was back aboard the filly for a gate-schooling session and a gallop earlier this week. “She felt really good,” he said. “She didn’t seem tired and she seemed happy. “Of course, this is a final and not a trial. If she keeps doing what she’s doing, she can get it done.” :: Bet with the Best! Get Free DRF PPs and Cashback when you wager. Join DRF Bets. Owned by Willie and Nancy Garcia of Hebbronville, Texas, Dark Nme won the $804,150 Remington Park Oklahoma-Bred Futurity at 330 yards in April and won a division of the Ruidoso Futurity trials at 350 yards on May 26. Dark Nme was not fast enough to gain a berth in the Ruidoso Futurity final. She qualified for the $100,000 consolation, but was not entered in favor of a start in the Rainbow Futurity trials. Wired 440 was beaten a nose in the Ruidoso Futurity, but was only third to Dark Nme in the Rainbow trials after a troubled start. One Valiant Love had the fastest qualifying time of 19.74 from the July 1 trials, benefiting from a 7 mph tailwind in his 400-yard debut. The runners with the five fastest times on June 30 and July 1 advanced to the final. Trainer Monty Arrossa said One Valiant Love must improve to win Sunday. “He looked like he handled the distance,” Arrossa said. “He’s going to have to be ultra-professional and ultra-perfect. He’ll have to break strongly.” Midnight Politics was timed in 19.80 in the July 1 trials. He starts from the outside post Sunday. “I think our horse is a contender,” trainer Jason Olmstead said. “The Heritage was no slouch race, and he ran true to form. “The way he acts and the way he’s built, I was waiting for Ruidoso. He’s coming along like we hoped he would. He’s maturing mentally and physically.” :: Want to learn more about handicapping and wagering? Check out DRF's Handicapping 101 and Wagering 101 pages.
