An already disrupted 2024 campaign for Dark Nme, the champion 2-year-old Quarter Horse filly of 2023, has gotten stranger in recent weeks in advance of Saturday’s $750,000 Rainbow Derby at the Downs at Albuquerque. The Rainbow is typically a mid-July fixture at Ruidoso Downs in southern New Mexico, but the meeting was moved to Albuquerque earlier this week after a series of devastating floods continued to strike Ruidoso Downs. The floods, which created torrents of water, mud and debris, were caused by runoff from nearby mountains scorched by wildfires in mid-June. The Rainbow Derby trials were scheduled for June 30 and then postponed to July 1 because of floods. They were finally run on July 6. The final was rescheduled from July 13 to July 20 and then postponed again when a massive flood hit Ruidoso Downs in the hours before the race. Dark Nme, and hundreds of other horses, were moved from Ruidoso Downs to Albuquerque in recent days. The field for the Rainbow Derby at 440 yards is unchanged from the July 20 lineup. Dark Nme, trained by Romeo Mireles, won a division of the trials in 21.63 seconds. Visa, winner of the $200,000 All American Juvenile in his final start of 2023, set the fastest-qualifying time of 21.55 seconds. :: Bet with the Best! Dark Nme seeks her fourth major stakes win, having won the Remington Park Oklahoma-bred, Rainbow, and Texas Classic futurities last year. She was third in the $3 million All American Futurity last September behind Cowboys Gun Z. On Saturday, Cowboys Gun Z starts in the $100,000 Rainbow Invitational at 440 yards, the consolation of the Rainbow Derby. Cowboys Gun Z has failed to replicate his All American form since last summer, losing trial races for the Ruidoso and Rainbow derbys. Dark Nme missed the Ruidoso Derby in June after she was given two workouts in the 61 days before the May 26 time trials. She needed two workouts within 60 days of the trials to be eligible. Los Alamitos London Toby, winner of the Brad McKinzie Los Alamitos Winter Championship in February, will be a massive favorite in Saturday’s $100,000 Spencer Childers at 400 yards at Los Alamitos, one of three six-figure stakes on the program. London Toby, who races for Los Alamitos track owner Ed Allred, earned a provisional berth to the $700,000 Champion of Champions at Los Alamitos in December with the win in the Winter Championship. In his last start, London Toby was third behind 2022 World Champion Empressum in the Vessels Maturity on July 7, the track’s leading summertime race for older horses. Later on Saturday, Winners Share can record his first stakes win in the $225,000 Governor’s Cup Derby at 400 yards. Winners Share set the fastest qualifying time of 19.98 seconds in time trials on July 6. The richest race on the program is the $400,000 Governor’s Cup Futurity at 350 yards. The race will be the stakes debut for fastest qualifier Favorite Jesshawk, who was timed in 17.71 seconds on July 6. :: Want to learn more about handicapping and wagering?
