Dark Nme outruns Especially Goodcandy in Texas Classic Futurity

Dark Nme improved her career record to 8 for 9 on Saturday night when she darted to a length win over Especially Goodcandy in the Grade 1, $1 million Texas Classic Futurity at Lone Star Park.

On the same card, Kj Desparado became the first Quarter Horse to go over $3 million in earnings, according to a press release from the track. He achieved the milestone when he captured the Grade 1, $100,000 Refrigerator.

Cowboys Gun Z, the All American Futurity winner who was the fastest Texas Classic qualifier on the first day of trials, had issues at the gate in the finale Saturday and finished seventh. Dark Nme was the fastest qualifier on the second day of trials for the Texas Classic.

In the finale, she covered 400 yards on a fast track in 19.49 seconds. Francisco Calderon was aboard for trainer Santos Carrizales Jr. The winner paid $2.60.

Dark Nme picked up $523,390 for winning the richest race in Texas and the first-place check pushed her career earnings to $1,559,452. Earlier this year, she won the Grade 1 Rainbow in track-record time at Ruidoso Downs and was third as the favorite in the All American Futurity.

Dark Nme is a daughter of Hes Relentless who races for TYKHE Racing.

Kj Desparado dominated the Refrigerator by 1 1/4 lengths to push his career earnings to $3,031,599. He covered 440 yards in 21.34 seconds and returned $2.60. Adrian Ramos was aboard for trainer Wes Giles. John Lee, Kathy Lee and Ruben Mares own the son of Apollitical Jess.

Chasing Aj ($8.80), who also is by Apollitical Jess, was a neck winner over 3-5 favorite Jess Good Win in the Grade 1, 4478,756 Texas Classic Derby. The winner covered 440 yards in 21.45.

Lone Star handled $1,011,137 on the 12-race card from all sources. Attendance ontrack was 5,419, according to figures provided by Lone Star. The track’s meet for Quarter Horses continues through Nov. 25.
