FLORENCE, Ky. – Dana's Beauty pulled off a massive upset to start the final run of four stakes on Saturday evening at Turfway Park, returning $43.14 for a wire-to-wire win in the $300,000 Latonia Stakes for fillies and mares. Favored Botanical faded to fifth in the lane, incurring her first local loss. The Latonia was one of two stakes for older horses on Saturday's marquee card at Turfway. One race later, there was also a mild upset in the Grade 3, $300,000 Kentucky Cup Classic, with Cellist ($14.78) defeating a salty field of older horses, including defending race winner Wolfie's Dynaghost, who was seventh as the favorite. Dana's Beauty was one of three winners through the first 10 races on the card for Jose Ortiz, who recently announced intentions to move his tack to Kentucky this spring [ https://www.drf.com/news/jose-ortiz-relocating-kentucky ] Dana's Beauty caught a flyer from the outside post in the field of 10 starters under Ortiz for the early lead. Botanical, breaking just to her inside under Chris Landeros, was content to cede the lead and moved outside to sit on Dana's Beauty's hip through an opening quarter of 24.69 seconds and half in 49.56 seconds, appearing to be coasting through a perfect trip. :: Bet the races with a $200 First Deposit Match + FREE All Access PPs! "Passing the three-eighths pole, I asked her a little bit, and she jumped in the bridle beautifully," Ortiz said. "When I took a peek back I didn't see Botanical, so I thought maybe if I asked her to go all the way and she goes, I might have a shot. And when I asked her, she responded very good. I was happy throughout the race. She relaxed very well." Dana's Beauty kept pouring it on into the stretch, opening up as much as a three-length lead at one point. Chop Chop, last-out winner of the Wintergreen Stakes at Turfway, launched a late run, but could not seriously threaten the leader, with Dana's Beauty hitting the wire 2 3/4 lengths in front. She finished the 1 1/16 miles in 1:43.96. After the top two, it was another length back to Forever After All, last after the opening half, who closed for third. She was 2 3/4 lengths clear of Sister Lou Ann, with that one edging a fading Botanical for fourth. The latter had won her previous five starts at Turfway, including the 2023 Cincinnati Trophy and Bourbonette Oaks. This was by far the biggest career win for Dana's Beauty, a 6-year-old Not This Time mare who has now won 8 of 37 career starts. She has changed hands via the claim box multiple times, most recently for $25,000 last September. She is owned by the Magic Oaks Stable of the brother and sister team of horse owner and trainer Adam Rice and Taylor Ortiz, who is married to Jose Ortiz. Taylor Ortiz worked for trainer Joe Sharp last summer in Saratoga, and Sharp now trains Dana's Beauty, who came in to the Latonia off an allowance-optional claiming win March 8 at Turfway. "It's very nice," Jose Ortiz said. "This is a big race." Another veteran campaigner, the 6-year-old gelding Cellist, won for the fourth time in 21 career starts in the Kentucky Cup Classic. The Calumet Farm homebred, a son of resident champion Not This Time, won for the first time since taking the Grade 3 Louisville Stakes in May 2022 - although he has placed in four starts since then, including runner-up finishes in the Prairie Bayou Stakes at Turfway in both 2022 and 2023. Cellist and Luis Saez sat a comfortable stalking trip off the honest pace set by longshot Wentru. Cellist was third on the outside and taking dead aim coming around the far turn as Wolfie's Dynaghost poked his head in the front, with Funtastic Again, also a stakes winner at Turfway in 2023, challenging on his outside. "The plan we had was try to break and find a good spot," Saez said. "He always breaks and tries to go to the lead, but today he relaxed and everything went to plan. The pace was pretty good, it was pretty honest." Cellist reeled in Funtastic Again in the stretch, and had enough to hold sway to the wire, 2 3/4 lengths clear of Grade 1 winner Atone, who rallied to be second by a head over Funtastic Again. The time for the 1 1/16 miles was 1:49.33. :: Want to learn more about handicapping and wagering? Check out DRF's Handicapping 101 and Wagering 101 pages.
