Dame Dorothy regroups for Bed o’ Roses

ELMONT, N.Y. – Having missed a Grade 1 opportunity when she got sick before the $1 million Ogden Phipps two weeks ago, Dame Dorothy will have to settle for a Grade 3 chance when she runs in Saturday’s $150,000 Bed o’ Roses Handicap at Belmont Park.
Dame Dorothy, undefeated at the seven-furlong distance of the Bed o’ Roses, including a victory in the Grade 1 Humana Distaff last out, likely will be favored in an eight-horse field that includes three-time graded stakes winner La Verdad and the improving Room for Me.
Dame Dorothy, named by celebrity chef Bobby Flay in honor of his mother, was being pointed to the Phipps at 1 1/16 miles before developing a temperature. She was one of several horses in trainer Todd Pletcher’s barn who had a temperature.
“She was able to get rid of it pretty quickly,” Pletcher said. “She’s come back with a couple of good breezes. This looked like a logical race for her considering her success in the Humana Distaff.”
Dame Dorothy is the 123-pound highweight under Javier Castellano. She will break from post 4.
La Verdad, 5 for 6 at Belmont Park, is coming off a nose victory in the Grade 3 Vagrancy at 6 1/2 furlongs. She is winless in two starts at seven furlongs. She is the second highweight at 122 pounds and will break from post 6 under Jose Ortiz.
Street Story upset the Grade 3 Victory Ride here as a 3-year-old last year and is back at Belmont after winning the Grade 3 Winning Colors at Churchill Downs last out. Jose Lezcano rides Street Story from the outside post 8.
Others entered were Expression, Medaglia d’Argento, Hot Rendezvous, and Tahoe Tigress.
