ARCADIA, Calif. – Someday the Grade 3 San Juan Capistrano Stakes will have a new look, after veteran gelding Red King retires and if trainer Phil D’Amato skips the turf marathon. But not yet. Red King, San Juan winner in 2020 and third in 2019 and 2021, makes his fourth appearance in the 1 3/4-mile stakes on Sunday, closing day at Santa Anita. Red King’s trainer also has made the San Juan a habit. D’Amato will seek his fourth straight win in the San Juan, a race with significance limited mostly to the pick six. Closing day offers a mandatory payout; the jackpot was $221,453 into Friday. Barring a single-ticket winner Friday or Saturday, a multi-million-dollar pool is likely for the 20-cent wager on races 6-11 on Sunday. The San Juan (race 7) is the second leg. Pick six bettors who survive the first leg – a maiden-20 sprint with Besame Mucho, Eleniak, and Westphal – will not catch a break in a puzzling San Juan void of current class and early speed. Eight entered the $125,000 San Juan, and though Red King might be the most likely winner based on current form and affinity for the distance, he is no sure thing. D’Amato also entered Rijeka, winner of a $25,000 claiming starter allowance last out. :: Bet the races on DRF Bets! Others in the San Juan include Avenue, recently fourth with trouble in an entry-level allowance; Modus Operandi, an allowance-caliber shipper from the Midwest; and Dean Martini, an allowance-caliber gelding who could inherit the lead. Breakpoint, Kazan, and Muhammad Ali also entered. Red King, 8, has lost a step since his banner 2020 campaign when he won the San Juan and Grade 2 Del Mar Handicap. But the D’Amato-trained veteran enters his fourth San Juan in top form: He finished second last out in a second-level allowance/optional $80,000 claiming race. “Red King is a hard knocker who showed some good life last time,” D’Amato told Santa Anita publicity. “He was a game second and he loves this San Juan Capistrano distance, so he’s got all those things in his favor going into this race.” Abel Cedillo rides 8-for-40 Red King. Joe Bravo rides D’Amato-trained Rijeka, a 6-for-31 gelding who won a $25,000 claiming starter last out at 1 1/4 miles. Although 1 3/4 miles is the longest distance Rijeka has tried, he won multiple races at 1 3/8 miles or more. Distance is not likely to be an issue. :: Win big at Santa Anita: Get DRF Past Performances, Picks, Clocker Reports and more.  Lightly raced Avenue, 1 for 5, finished fourth last out in an entry-level allowance from which the winner and runner-up returned to win. Dean Martini drops from a sixth in the Grade 2 Charles Whittingham and is likely to use his speed under new rider Edwin Maldonado. Pick six bettors find a potential single in race 8, an entry-level allowance turf sprint. The front-runner Fast Buck is expected to start favored seeking his third straight. In race 9, a maiden special weight sprint, Hero Status is the likely favorite based on a last-out runner-up finish. Race 10 is impossible; race 11 is the Grade 3 American Stakes led by Vanzzy.
