In 2017, trainer Phil D’Amato won a personal-best six stakes during the Del Mar summer meeting in races ranging from main track sprints to turf marathons. D’Amato won two stakes at Del Mar last summer, a figure he could equal this summer as quickly as next weekend. Sunday, D’Amato starts Red King in the Grade 3 Cougar II Handicap at 1 1/2 miles on dirt. Next Saturday, the stable has depth with Count Again and Say the Word on schedule for a tough running of the Grade 2 Eddie Read Stakes at 1 1/8 miles, and Equilove and Going Global for the Grade 2 San Clemente Stakes for 3-year-old fillies at a mile on turf. On July 25, Rakassah, the winner of two allowance races on turf at Santa Anita in April and May, will have her stakes debut in the $80,000 Daisycutter Handicap for fillies and mares at five furlongs on turf. Going Global won four stakes at the Santa Anita winter-spring meeting and is expected to be favored in the $200,000 San Clemente Stakes. Count Again is a late addition to the list of Eddie Read probable starters, which is expected to include the 2021 graded stakes winners Restrainedvengence, Smooth Like Strait, and United. Say the Word was second to Smooth Like Strait in the Grade 1 Shoemaker Mile at Santa Anita on May 31. :: Visit DRF's Del Mar shop for all your handicapping needs: Past performances, picks, Clocker Reports, Betting Strategies, and more Count Again has worked well in recent weeks on the infield training track at Santa Anita to sway D’Amato’s plans to start the 6-year-old gelding in the $250,000 Eddie Read instead of waiting for the Grade 2 Del Mar Mile on Aug. 21. “His last two breezes have shown me he’s on his A game,” D’Amato said. “He’s ready to run.” Count Again was fourth in the Grade 1 Old Forester Turf Classic at 1 1/8 miles on turf at Churchill Downs on May 1. Earlier this year, Count Again was third by a half-length in the Grade 1 Frank Kilroe Mile at Santa Anita.
