Two-time Horse of the Year Curlin, a consistent classic sire who is enjoying a career year in the commercial arena, will stand for an unchanged stud fee of $175,000 in 2020, Hill 'n' Dale Farm announced Sunday night. Fees for the rest of the farm's roster will be announced at a later date. Curlin, a Smart Strike horse who entered stud in 2009 after racing for Stonestreet and partners, is the sire of 2013 Belmont Stakes winner Palace Malice and 2016 Preakness Stakes winner Exaggerator, along with classic-placed runners Good Magic - who was also a juvenile champion - Irish War Cry, Keen Ice, and Ride On Curlin. The stallion's 10 graded stakes winners in 2019 include Vino Rosso, who is a candidate for the Breeders' Cup Classic. Curlin is the sire of the most expensive juvenile sold in North America this season, a $3.65 million colt at Fasig-Tipton Gulfstream, and is the sire of eight seven-figure yearlings this sale season, including a $4.1 million colt at Keeneland September who is the highest-priced yearling colt in North America this year. "Curlin has enjoyed a phenomenal year on the racetrack and in the sales ring," Hill 'n' Dale president John Sikura said in a release. "His book will not exceed 140 mares, and we expect he will once again attract a phenomenal group of mares. I thank [Stonestreet owner] Barbara Banke for her support of mares and allowing his stud fee to remain unchanged ... when his accomplishments could have justified a raise. Allowing breeders to be profitable is essential and engenders loyalty to the Hill 'n' Dale stallions." :: DRF BREEDING LIVE: Real-time coverage of breeding and sales
