Curlin’s Princess well placed in Gulfstream allowance

Marty McGee|Aug 05, 2015

HALLANDALE BEACH, Fla. – Nobody is saying that Curlin’s Princess is a future stakes winner, least of all her trainer, Marty Wolfson. But with her pedigree and the advantage of a recent race under the proverbial belt, the 3-year-old filly is a prime candidate to advance through her first allowance condition.

Bred and owned by retired trainer Happy Alter, Curlin’s Princess comes favorably drawn in the outside post in the lone allowance on a 10-race Friday card at Gulfstream Park, a $44,000 race at six furlongs. Six other fillies and mares will start to her inside.

Harry Hernandez, who entered this week with 19 wins as the top apprentice at the summer meet, has a return call on Curlin’s Princess, a Curlin filly who flashed her potential here in June 2014 by easily winning her second career start.

I O Ines, Political Storm, and Emerald Citadelle loom as the chief threats in a race also governed by a $16,000 claiming option.

First post Friday is 1:15 p.m. Eastern, with the feature set for 5:41.

KEY CONTENDERS

Curlin’s Princess (Last 3 Beyers: 60-39-72)

Following a layoff of nearly a year, this chestnut filly prompted the pace of a tough turf sprint on the Summit of Speed card, fading a bit when clearly standing to benefit from the race; shows three quick local works in the interim.

Within the last year, Wolfson has won 13 stakes, all on the south Florida circuit, with the latest coming last weekend with Falling Sky in the Trinniberg.

I O Ines (Last 3 Beyers: 77-52-24)

Career-best Beyer resulted from the last start for this 4-year-old English Channel filly at a slightly longer distance, in the slop, and against “beaten” claimers; gets a sterner test here amid the possibility of a bounce.

Political Storm (Last 3 Beyers: 71-71-72)

This 6-year-old mare with one career win was fairly effective at the championship meet and now shortens back to a sprint for a new trainer after more than five months away; liable to get outfooted early.

Emerald Citadelle (Last 3 Beyers: 63-64-52)

New York-bred filly figures as a pace factor after just missing by a neck at 10-1 in a similar spot July 4; perennially underrated type has rounded into decent form since switching to dirt in the spring.
