Two-time Horse of the Year Curlin made the vast majority of his starts in Grade/Group 1 races and only missed the top three once while retiring as North America’s all-time leading money winner. His high achievement has continued into his second career as a stallion, as he has been a remarkably consistent sire of upper-level horses. Curlin, whose first foals raced in 2012, has now been a top 10 living general sire for 10 straight years. The resident of Hill ‘n’ Dale Farm finished second on that earnings list in 2016, 2019, and 2023. A consistent classic sire represented by two winners and six other individual top-three finishers in the Triple Crown series, Curlin led North America by Grade 1 winners in 2021 and 2022, and finished a narrow second to Into Mischief (Spendthrift Farm) and Justify (Ashford Stud) in 2023, with five on the flat to their six apiece. Curlin’s Grade 1 winners took three Breeders’ Cup races last November at Santa Anita, moving him into the all-time lead for victories at that event, with eight overall. Curlin was represented, in race order, by Breeders’ Cup Dirt Mile winner Cody’s Wish, Distaff winner Idiomatic, and Sprint winner Elite Power. Curlin is also the sire of 2023 Grade 1 winner Clairiere. Rounding out Curlin’s quintet of Grade 1 winners on the flat was Jockey Club Gold Cup winner Bright Future. Cody's Wish was named Horse of the Year at the Eclipse Awards ceremony on Jan. 25, and also was voted outstanding older dirt male. Idiomatic, also a Horse of the Year finalist, was named outstanding older dirt female, while Elite Power won the male sprinter title for the second year in a row. That trio was among Curlin's stallion-leading five Eclipse finalists, along with Clairiere in the older female division; and Snap Decision, a Grade 1 winner over fences, as an outstanding steeplechase finalist. Curlin further showed his consistency at the top level on Daily Racing Form’s exclusive stallion metrics, the Beyer Sire Performance Standings. His progeny recorded the most Beyer Speed Figures of 100 or higher for any stallion, with 18 total, turned in by seven horses. The 112 that Cody’s Wish recorded winning the Grade 1 Metropolitan Handicap in June was tied for the highest number of the season, with a pair of 112s that champion Echo Zulu, by Gun Runner (Three Chimneys Farm), earned winning the Grade 2 Honorable Miss and Grade 1 Ballerina, both at Saratoga. Off his standout season, Curlin’s stud fee for 2024 will jump to the highest level of his career. Curlin will stand for an advertised fee of $250,000, tying him with five-time reigning leading sire Into Mischief and young phenom Gun Runner (Three Chimneys) as the most expensive stallion in North America. Standing alongside Curlin at Hill ‘n’ Dale for a relative bargain $125,000 is his champion son Good Magic, sire of 2023 Kentucky Derby winner Mage in his first crop, and Grade 1 winner Muth in his second crop. Good Magic was the second consecutive son of Curlin to sire a Derby winner in his first crop, with Keen Ice (Calumet Farm) represented by Rich Strike in 2022 as Curlin rapidly builds this aspect of his legacy. As the stallion continues to establish himself as a sire of sires, he was represented by two young sons in the top 10 on the freshman earnings list - Vino Rosso (Spendthrift) in third, and Solomini (McMahon of Saratoga Thoroughbreds) in seventh, as the only stallion outside of Kentucky in the top 10. Curlin's Preakness Stakes-winning son Exaggerator (Elite Thoroughbreds) is the sire of classic-placed Skippylongstocking, who was a graded stakes winner in 2023; Exaggerator is now a leading sire in Louisiana.
