Crupi wins Discovery at AQU Nov 3 2023
Chelsea Durand/NYRA Crupi wins the Discovery Stakes on Friday at Aqueduct under Kendrick Carmouche.

Crupi flattered Breeders’ Cup Classic entrant Saudi Crown on Friday when he became a stakes winner at Aqueduct in the $150,000 Discovery.

Crupi came into the race off a fifth-place finish to Saudi Crown in the Grade 1 Pennsylvania Derby. Saudi Crown, as well as Pennsylvania Derby runner-up Dreamlike, are scheduled to run Saturday at Santa Anita in the Classic.

Crupi was favored in the Discovery and won by 1 1/4 lengths over Winters Lion. It was another 5 3/4 lengths back in third to Army Times.

The Discovery, for 3-year-olds at 1 1/8 miles, shared a card with the $150,000 Turnback the Alarm for fillies and mares won by Interstatedaydream.

Crupi ($4.40) was situated along the rail in the Discovery, sitting just off the pace set by Army Times. The leader took the field through an opening quarter in 25.04 seconds and a half-mile in 49.80 before Crupi drew even with a sudden move up the rail. Crupi raced with Army Times through six furlongs in 1:13.30, then continued to battle on and covered the distance on a fast track in 1:51.60.

Kendrick Carmouche was aboard the winner for trainer Todd Pletcher.

Interstatedaydream outbattled Tizzy in the Sky for a neck win in the Turnback the Alarm. It was another four lengths back in third to Morning Matcha.

Interstatedaydream ($3.90) pressed Tizzy in the Sky through fractions of 24.42 for the opening quarter, 47.88 for the half-mile, and 1:12.10 for six furlongs. The battle was on in the stretch, with Interstatedaydream narrowly prevailing in the 1 1/8-mile race run in 1:50.34.

Trevor McCarthy rode the winner for trainer Brad Cox.

Interstatedayream is a daughter of Classic Empire who races for Staton Flurry. She is now 7 for 14 with earnings of $806,369.

* There is a pick six carryover of $114,441 into the Saturday Aqueduct card.
