Crowley's Law comes through as favorite in River Memories

Michael Burns Crowley's Law, ridden by David Moran, scores by 1 3/4 lengths in the River Memories.

ETOBICOKE, Ontario — The favored English filly Crowley’s Law notched her first stakes in the $103,800 River Memories at Woodbine on Saturday.

Zensational Bunny and Silent Treat linked up on the lead through honest fractions in the one-mile turf route for fillies and mares. Crowley’s Law tracked them along the inside under David Moran, as Notte d’Oro stalked three wide under Patrick Husbands.

Notte d’Oro took control in the stretch, with Crowley’s Law in close proximity. Crowley’s Law split horses nearing the eighth pole, before edging away for a 1 3/4- length score over Notte d’Oro. Over “good” ground, the final time was 1:35.37.

Checkered Past rallied belatedly for third, in a field reduced to six after the scratches of Chedington and Jealous Cat.

Moran said trainer Tom Dascombe told him not to hit the front too soon with Crowley’s Law because the well-bred daughter of Dubawi had shown a tendency to idle on the lead.

“When I saw Patrick was the only one traveling, I just parked behind him,” Moran said. “When I got by the eighth pole, I just let her go. She won easy.”

Crowley’s Law ($2.90) earned $60,000 for owner Paul Crowley.
