Crevalle d'Oro gets more ground, blinkers in search of breakthrough

ETOBICOKE, Ontario – Crevalle d’Oro looks best among the three Mark Casse-trained 2-year-old fillies in Thursday’s third race at Woodbine, a one-mile maiden special on the main turf with a base purse of $72,000.
Crevalle d’Oro wound up third after running greenly when debuting in one of the better juvenile races of the meet on the grass July 22. The winner, Airosa, came back to take the Catch a Glimpse Stakes with an 85 Beyer Speed Figure, and runner-up Golden Canary subsequently beat the boys in the Soaring Free Stakes with an 80 Beyer.
Crevalle d’Oro ran a bit green again most recently when third in another maiden special sprint on the main turf. After going four wide on the turn, she loomed into contention at the top of the stretch before flattening out while getting a 70 Beyer.
A daughter of Constitution, Crevalle d’Oro is bred to run on and is adding blinkers for the stretch-out. Emma-Jayne Wilson inherits the mount from Patrick Husbands, who is sticking with Crevalle d’Oro’s stablemate Why Em Sea Ay.
Why Em Sea Ay finished second in her improved second start in a Tapeta sprint before experimenting on the inner turf in a two-turn mile. Sent off as the 9-5 favorite, she led the way before fading to third and was promoted to second by disqualification. The rail position will be in lane 3 on Thursday and might benefit her forward style.
The third Casse entrant is Emerance, who was fourth when debuting in tough turf sprint that contained the talented Ready to Jam. Emerance, a daughter of Nyquist, finished a flat fifth most recently in a six-furlong Tapeta sprint, from which third-place finisher Hurricane Clair exited to romp in the $201,000 Muskoka Stakes for graduates of Canadian yearling sales.
Emerance is adding blinkers and apprentice Sofia Vives, who has impressive numbers for the Casse barn. Going back five years, Casse has won at a 19-percent clip with maiden 2-year-old third-time starters in turf routes, with a return on investment of $1.43.
Inittowinit and Bravo Kate, both second-time starters in the nine-horse field, are bringing good turf pedigrees into their first start on that surface.
Inittowinit is by Flintshire, a Grade 1-winning millionaire on turf. The May foal is a half-sister to the long-winded turf stakes winners Season Ticket and Belichick, who took the third leg of the Canadian Triple Crown, the Breeders’ Stakes. With blinkers on, she should show much more than she did in her debut.
Bravo Kate is out of turf sprinter Katie O., the dam of Hank Ollie, who defeated $25,000 maidens here recently when traveling 1 1/16 miles on the main turf course.
Quality Presence has worked a bullet five-eighths in 59.80 seconds on the Tapeta since ending up fifth behind Crevalle d’Oro in her opening race. It wouldn’t be surprising to see her make her presence known.
Rounding out the field are Candid Candace, More Money Hunny, and Cozy Curlin Kitten.
Post time for the eight-race card is 4:40 p.m.
