Craft, Shamburg leave Retama; Leatherman named to fill posts

James Leatherman has been named racing secretary at Retama Park near San Antonio. He replaces Larry Craft and Mike Shamburg, who have resigned for positions with Magna Entertainment.

Craft, who was the director of racing for Retama and its racing secretary for the Thoroughbred meet, will continue to serve as the director of racing and racing secretary at Lone Star Park, a post he has held since the track opened in 1997.

Shamburg, who was the Quarter Horse racing secretary at Retama and the stakes coordinator at Lone Star, confirmed he has taken a year-round position with Magna. He would not elaborate further. Among other tracks, Magna owns Lone Star, near Dallas.

Leatherman, 32, has been with Retama since the track opened in April 1995. He has been assistant racing secretary for the past three years.

Leatherman's first meet will be for Quarter Horses, beginning April 29.
