Cozmic One, Zenyatta's first foal, to try turf

DEL MAR, Calif. – After a 106-week layoff, Cozmic One, a 5-year-old horse out of 2010 Horse of the Year Zenyatta, will have his turf debut in Sunday’s ninth race at Del Mar.
Owned by Jerry and Ann Moss and trained by John Shirreffs, the people behind Zenyatta, Cozmic One drew the rail in a field of 12 maidens that includes Sonneteer, who was 16th in the Kentucky Derby on May 6.
“It will be fun to see him run,” Shirreffs said of Cozmic One.
Cozmic One, by Bernardini, has started twice. He was sixth in a maiden race at a mile at Santa Anita in April 2015 and seventh in a maiden race at 1 1/16 miles at Belmont Park on July 8, 2015.
Shirreffs said Cozmic One did not require surgery during the two-year break. Shirreffs said he was encouraged that Cozmic One worked five furlongs in 1:00.80 at Santa Anita on July 15, a quicker work than the normal pattern.
“He had his best work ever,” Shirreffs said. “I hope he runs an even race in the beginning and shows a finish at the end. He’s sort of been one-paced.”
