Cox remains hot as Majestic Affair wins Good Lord

Trainer Brad Cox kept his hot hand at Ellis Park when represented Sunday by the victorious Majestic Affair in the 41st running of the $50,000 Good Lord.
Ridden by Shaun Bridgmohan, Majestic Affair got a clean stalking trip after breaking sharply from his outside post in a field of six older horses before prevailing by 1 1/4 lengths over a late-running Shut the Box. The winner returned $4 as the favorite after finishing 6 1/2 furlongs in a swift 1:15.41 over a fast track.
The victory was the eighth from the last 13 starters at the Ellis meet for Cox, who was otherwise busy at Saratoga saddling Monomoy Girl for her rousing triumph in the Coaching Club American Oaks. Cox had gone winless with his first 12 starts at a meet that began July 1.
The $2 exacta (8-2) paid $15.80, the $1 trifecta (8-2-7) returned $30.70, and the 10-cent superfecta (8-2-7-1) was worth $7.35.
After four dark days, another three-day week resumes Friday at Ellis. The next stakes date at this 30-day meet is Aug. 5, when a quartet of $100,000 previews toward the Sept. 1-13 Kentucky Downs meet will be run.
