Cox invades for Oklahoma Derby card

Trainer Brad Cox will attempt to win the Grade 3 Oklahoma Derby for the second year in a row Sunday when he sends out Shared Sense as the probable favorite in the most prestigious race at Remington Park.

Cox won last year’s Oklahoma Derby with Owendale.

Shared Sense became a stakes winner in July in the Grade 3 Indiana Derby. He races for his breeder, Godolphin.

“He’s doing well,” said Cox, who has given the mount to Richard Eramia.

Shared Sense drew post 5 in a field of nine for the $200,000 Oklahoma Derby. Entries were taken Wednesday. The complete field from the rail with riders is: Salow, Iram Diego; Creative Plan, Orlando Mojica; Rowdy Yates, Stewart Elliott; Liam, Lane Luzzi; Shared Sense; Code Runner, Lindey Wade; Avant Garde, Luis Quinonez; Mo Mosa, Ramon Vazquez; and Dean Martini, David Cabrera.

Shared Sense is one of four horses Cox plans to start on Sunday’s card of eight stakes worth a cumulative $640,000.

“Mr. Misunderstood runs in the Remington Green,” Cox said Tuesday. “He was second in that race last year, so hopefully we can get the job done this year.”

Eramia has the mount from post 5 in the eight-horse field.

Cox also has a 2-year-old stakes starter Sunday.

“Vulcan has won his last two in Indiana, and we’re bringing him for the Kip Deville,” Cox said.

Eramia has the mount from post 6 in the field of seven for the $60,000 Kip Deville.

Irish Mischief goes for Cox in the $50,000 Flashy Lady.

The card Sunday also includes the Grade 3, $100,000 Remington Park Oaks, and the field of eight includes three fillies from the barn of trainer Ken McPeek – Curls and Bows, Envoutante, and Jeweled Princess. They meet Southern California shipper Paige Anne.

The 11-race card has a special post of 3 p.m. Central. Purses for some of the stakes – including the Oklahoma Derby, which last year was worth $400,000 – were reduced for this meet after the pandemic led to the temporary shutdown of the casino at Remington. The pandemic also has led to rider assignments for Sunday being limited to jockeys based in Oklahoma City.

The forecast for Sunday is for a high of 88 degrees and a 10 percent chance of precipitation, according to The Weather Channel.
