Cox has seven-win weekend despite Covfefe's loss

LOUISVILLE, Ky. – Covfefe got beat, and still last weekend was another fabulous one for trainer Brad Cox.
“Covfefe ran really well, but sometimes you don’t win even when you run big,” said Cox, who had seven winners among four different tracks from Friday to Sunday, most notably Owendale in the Ohio Derby at Thistledown.
Covfefe was the 2-5 favorite here Saturday in the six-furlong Roxelana in her first start since breaking a track record in the May 17 Miss Preakness at Pimlico. She went head-and-head for much of the way in the Roxelana with eventual winner Mia Mischief before fading late to finish third, beaten three-quarters of a length.
“I thought we really needed to have a race for the filly before we move on to Saratoga with her,” said Cox. “You never like to lose, but hopefully this will serve its purpose.”
The Grade 1 Test on Aug. 3 at Saratoga will be the next start for Covfefe, along with another Cox standout 3-year-old filly, Break Even, who is unbeaten in five starts.
Cox had three wins Friday, two Saturday, and two Sunday, including Kid Is Frosty in the Spectacular Bid division of the New York Stallion Stakes at Belmont Park.
