The 31-day summer meet at Ellis Park in western Kentucky got started Sunday amid sultry weather and with a pair of trainers, Eric Foster and Brad Cox, both winning back-to-back races. Foster, based at Ellis for much of the year, won races 2 and 3, and Cox went next in races 4 and 5. “Family and friends who don’t always get to go to the races were here,” Foster said. “That makes winning that much better.” Ellis action resumes with an eight-race Thursday card leading off the only four-day week of a meet that runs through Sept. 4. A trio of allowances (races 3, 4, 7) should make for a fine day of racing. After Thursday, a three-day schedule of Fridays through Sundays will be in effect. First post daily is 12:50 p.m. Central, and general admission is free.
