Cowan, Ohio trainer, dies at 77

Chuck Scaravilli|Jul 14, 2007

Elmer Cowan, who trained horses in Ohio for more than 50 years, died early Friday morning in a Columbus, Ohio, rehabilitation clinic at age 77.

Cowan, a native of Roseville, Ohio, had his last winner in Thursday's eighth race at Thistledown with Gemini's Revenge, owned by Cowan and trained by his son Gary.

Elmer Cowan won training titles at Thistledown and Beulah and handled numerous stakes winners and Ohio-bred horses of the year, including Crypto's Redjet, who earned that title in 1996 and 1997.

Funeral arrangements are pending. Cowan is survived by three sons, Gary, Mark, and Terry, and will be buried in Columbus.
