Court injured in motorcycle accident
Jockey Jon Court is expected to be sidelined at least until late August after suffering a fractured collarbone in a motorcycle accident last week.
Court, 57, is a six-time leading rider at Ellis Park in western Kentucky. He told Ellis publicity that surgery to repair the affected area involved the insertion of a plate and seven screws.
Court, a winner of more than 4,100 races, has suffered a multitude of injuries in a career dating to 1980, including fractured ribs in a water-tubing accident that forced him to miss the 2016 Ellis meet.
Five-day week at Ellis
While Ellis Park will race Fridays-Sundays for most of the 30-day meet, Wednesday will begin a five-day week at the Henderson, Ky., track. The extended week is because of the July 4 holiday.
Nine races are carded for Wednesday, highlighted by a $43,000 allowance (race 8) for 3-year-olds and up going a mile on turf. Eight races are carded for Thursday and Friday. The first stakes of the meet, the $50,000 Ellis Park Turf for fillies and mares, is set for Sunday. First post daily is 12:50 p.m. Central.
◗ The closing of the Churchill meet meant a forceout of the Single 6 pool, which led to single-day handle of $400,154 in pursuit of a nine-day carryover of $64,231. Each winning 20-cent ticket was worth $1,820.
