Cory Gal wins a May 3 allowance at Gulfstream Park
Ryan Thompson/Coglianese Photos Cory Gal wins an allowance race at Gulfstream Park on May 3. She will be favored on Thursday.

Cory Gal looks solid in a first-level allowance race with a $25,000 claiming option that will serve as the feature race at Gulfstream Park on Thursday. The six-furlong dash for fillies and mares drew seven horses and goes as race 9 on a 10-race card that begins at noon Eastern.

Cory Gal will be a single on a lot of tickets in the Rainbow Pick 6, which has a $729,958 carryover.

Trained by Gustavo Delgado, Cory Gal won three straight before finishing fourth in a second-level allowance race with a $62,500 claiming option on June 21. With Edgard Zayas riding, she was in front early, but came up empty late in the 6 1/2-furlong dash won by Liza Star, a stakes winner with 11 wins and $300,585 in earnings. It was a key race, too, with the runner-up Crumb Bun and Spanish Point, who finished last, coming back to win.

Crumb Bun romped by 6 1/4 lengths going a mile in $62,500 optional claimer with second allowance conditions that was washed off the turf on July 24. She received an 84 Beyer Speed Figure. Spanish Point was given an 80 Beyer for her win in a $35,000 claimer for nonwinners of three at Saratoga on July 25.

Cory Gal will appreciate the easier company. In her previous race, the Florida-bred daughter of Corfu was an easy 2 1/4-length winner over Midtown Rose in a first-level allowance race on May 3. She forced an honest pace before drawing off to decisively win the six-furlong sprint.

Expect a similar trip with Zayas, who was aboard for the three wins, retaining the mount. She will break from post 3.

Midtown Rose looks like the main threat. Trained by Saffie Joseph Jr., she can stalk and should get a nice trip breaking from the outside post with Marcos Meneses riding.

Following her runner-up finish to Cory Gal on May 3, she had a rough trip when she finished fifth as the 4-5 favorite at this level in a race won by Crumb Bun on May 28.

Midtown Rose has been freshened, and with a bullet four-furlong move in 47.80 seconds July 24 she could fire a big shot off the bench. Adding to her appeal, in the past five years Joseph has a 24 percent strike rate with horses coming back from a layoff between 61 and 180 days.

The Michael Maker-trained Baccarat Fashion could be sitting on a big effort in her second start back. The 5-year-old mare by Old Fashioned does her best work when she is in the mix early. In her comeback race she broke a step slow leaving from the rail. Running over a track rated sloppy, she did finish with some interest while getting up for third in the $25,000 optional claimer.

At the very least Bargainaire should be part of exotics tickets. Trained by Christine Wasilewski, the 4-year-old Kentucky-bred daughter of Super Saver was the runner-up in her last four races, including the same race Baccarat Fashion exits.
