Corrina Corrina has rare rebound chance in La Coneja

Corrina Corrina will find herself in the unusual position of having to rebound Friday when she starts in the $90,000 La Coneja for New Mexico-bred fillies and mares at six furlongs at Sunland Park.
Corrina Corrina is the all-time richest New Mexico-bred Thoroughbred with a career record of 17 win from 34 starts and earnings of $1,166,160. She is coming off a rare defeat, as she did not come out of the starting gate in her last start, the Bold Ego on Jan. 17 at Sunland.
“She reared up when they kicked it and didn’t leave the gates,” said trainer Gary Cross.

“Sometimes, she just does things her way. She didn’t hurt herself at all.”
Prior to that race, Corrina Corrina passed the $1 million earnings mark when she won the New Mexico Racing Commission Handicap on the Jan. 3 card at Sunland, breaking a record held by Rocky Gulch.
“It was pretty good because I had her daddy and her momma, too,” said Cross, who trained her sire, Mr. Trieste, and her dam, Scared Money.
Corrina Corrina races for Derrick Jenkins. She will start from post 2 under regular rider Tracy Hebert.
The field of eight includes Lemon Drop Gold, who is making her first start since winning last year’s La Coneja by two lengths over Corrina Corrina. For the effort, Lemon Drop Gold earned a Beyer Speed Figure of 87.
