Cornucopian and Imagination, stakes winners at Santa Anita and in Saudi Arabia in their last starts, had six-furlong workouts at Santa Anita on Friday in advance of scheduled starts in the Grade 1 Churchill Downs Stakes on May 2. Cornucopian, unbeaten in two starts this year, was timed in 1:12.20, while Imagination, winner of the Group 2 Riyadh Dirt Sprint in Saudi Arabia in February, was timed in 1:12.40. They are owned by partnership that includes SF Racing, Madaket Stable and Starlight Racing and are trained by Bob Baffert. Cornucopian closed from third of six to win the Grade 3 San Carlos Stakes at seven furlongs at 3-10 by 2 3/4 lengths at Santa Anita on March 29.  :: DRF Kentucky Derby Package: Save on Past Performances, Clocker Reports, Betting Strategies, and more. Imagination tends to run from farther off the pace. He closed from sixth of 14 to finish second in the Breeders’ Cup Sprint at Del Mar last November. In Saudi Arabia, Imagination closed from he back of a field of 13. “They have different running styles, so we don’t feel like they’re competing with each other for racetrack,” Tom Ryan of SF Racing said on Friday. “Imagination has come back from Saudi and let us know that he’s ready to rock again. “Cornucopian has advertised himself well lately. It was a tremendous race” in the San Carlos. The $1 million Churchill Downs Stakes at seven furlongs is part of the Kentucky Derby undercard, and annually brings together a competitive field.  In 2023, Cody’s Wish won the Churchill Downs Stakes in a year he was honored as Horse of the Year. Last year, Mindframe won the Churchill Downs Stakes against a field that included the previously unbeaten Nysos, who was third, and Book’em Danno, the 2025 champion male sprinter. The Baffert-trained Nysos later won four stakes in 2025, including the BC Dirt Mile. Baffert, who will have a stable of more than 30 runners at Churchill Downs this spring, is expected to have a strong presence in several graded stakes on Kentucky Derby week. Crude Velocity, a rapidly improving 3-year-old trained by Baffert, worked six furlongs in 1:11 on Friday.  Crude Velocity, who is nominated to the Grade 2 Pat Day Mile for 3-year-olds on May 2, is unbeaten in two starts, the latest of which was an allowance race at 6 1/2 furlongs at Santa Anita on April 4. Crude Velocity closed from fourth of six to win by 6 3/4 lengths in 1:14.32, earning a Beyer Speed Figure of 100. Baffert has a leading nominee for the Grade 1 Derby City Distaff for fillies and mares at seven furlongs at Churchill Downs on May 2 in the red-hot Splendora, who is owned by Randy and Jenny Boyd and Michael Talla. Splendora, who worked six furlongs in 1:11.60 at Santa Anita on Friday, has won her last three starts in the BC Filly and Mare Sprint at Del Mar last November, the Grade 2 D. Wayne Lukas Stakes at seven furlongs at Santa Anita in February, and the Grade 1 Beholder Mile by 5 3/4 lengths at Santa Anita at 1-10 in March. The five-time stakes winner Queen Maxima worked a half-mile in 47 seconds on the infield training track for a scheduled start in the Grade 2 Unbridled Sidney Stakes for fillies and mares at Churchill Downs on May 1, a race she won last year. The Unbridled Sidney at 5 1/2 furlongs on turf had a purse of $400,000 in 2025 and is worth $500,000 this year. In her last start, Queen Maxima finished third by two lengths at 2-5 in the Grade 3 Monrovia Stakes for fillies and mares at about 6 1/2 furlongs on the hillside turf course at Santa Anita on April 4, a loss that ended a two-race winning streak. In the minutes prior to the Monrovia, Queen Maxima was nearing the starting gate at the top of the hillside course when a veterinarian reportedly told jockey Juan Hernandez to school the mare over the dirt crossing at the bottom of the hillside turf course. To comply, Queen Maxima had approximately an additional mile of exercise before the Monrovia. Hernandez said immediately after the Monrovia that Queen Maxima was “very hot” and “a little mad” during warm-ups. Trainer Jeff Mullins said on Friday that Hernandez will ride Queen Maxima in the Unbridled Sidney. :: Want to learn more about handicapping and wagering?
